Chapter Four

JOHNNY

––––––––

THE WARM, SENSUOUS, and almost exotic sultry scent of Bexley pits desire straight under the crotch of my jeans.

“Since when do you need an invite?” my father growls, but I catch his undertone. He might be a big burly bear, but he loves his kids more than anything in life. He’s been overprotective since my mom died when I was too young to remember.

“Alright.” I slide into the seat beside Bexley.

An unladylike noise comes out of her as she bounces over the bench seat. She presses as close to the wall as she can.

I rub the area of the vinyl between us. “There’s lots of room. No need to make love to the wall.”

Her jaw tightens, her chest swells with a deep breath, and her eyes pierce mine. “That’s your choice of words?” She shimmies away from the wall.

I chuckle. “That’s better.” I rest my arms on the table, purposely rubbing her arm with my elbow.

I hear her gasp and groan mix. “Is it, though?”

“Loads of room.”

“Are you two just about finished?” My dad’s grave eyes stare at us from across the table. He’s aged since I’ve been gone. Gray has stolen the unkempt hair that frames his weathered face. He’s still strong as an ox, but he’s more chilled now.

“I’m ready to order.” I snatch a menu from between the napkin and the ketchup bottle.

“Didn’t you already eat?” My dad takes my menu and passes it to Bexley.

“I’m here for my dessert.” I drape my arm over the seat behind Bexley and lean in to read her menu.

Her head tilts up to me ever so slowly. Her gorgeous hazel eyes flicker with a hundred emotions. “Did Otto hit your head too hard against the wall?” Her breath kisses my skin.

My dad snorts, and opens a menu for himself.

“Why do you ask?” I resist the urge to brush her wispy bags aside.

“You seem to be under the impression I’m your dessert.” I don’t remember her being this forward. I like it.

“What’s wrong with that?”

“I’ll be putting my fist in your face.” My dad sends me a warning glare over the top of his menu.

Bexley drops her gaze back to her menu. “Won’t be necessary. Johnny will be gone before we have time to blink.”

“That’s not true.” I tap the menu. “I’ll have a slice of caramel apple cheesecake.” I settle back in my seat. “I’m back for good.”

“Let’s roll out the red carpet.” My dad makes a rolling motion with his hand. “All hail. Johnny Creed is back.”

“Bullshit, you’re excited.” I stretch out my legs and knock the side of my dad’s foot.

“I can barely hold in my excitement.” He sidekicks my foot away. “You better be buying your own place. There ain’t no room at my goddam house. Your two sisters is plenty enough.”

“I was thinking about a small house on the water.” I lean back in the booth and fold my arms over my chest. I inhale as I vision the property. “At least three bedrooms, you know, for lil’ baby Johnnies.”

“Good lord, he’s talking about having kids.” My dad lifts his arm to catch the attention of a waitress. The bar is swamped as usual on a Saturday evening.
