“I heard the Boo Fest was a success until it ended.”

I cross my arms and perch my eyebrows. “Oh, yeah. By who?”

“You know who.”

Johnny.

“I love him.”

She grunts. “I know you do.”

“He loves me.”

She grunts again. “I know he does.”

“Good because I’m going to tell him, and he’s going to stick around, and I’m going to marry your brother.”

Billie’s smile reaches both ears. “Of course you are.”

“But first, I have to put a stop to whatever the trio is doing.”

Billie catches my arm and keeps me beside her. “But, do you?” She points across the circle.

I make eye contact with Johnny. A week apart is too long. My insides explode with emotions that feel as if they’re going to burst out of me.

I take a step, but Billie has a solid grip. “Wait,” she whispers.

I’ve waited ten years. I don’t want to wait another second.

“And here’s our bike owner now.” Hattie hands the microphone to Johnny. His eyes haven’t left mine.

“Good afternoon, everyone.” His voice is as smooth as whisky and rum. “Thank you for showing up for my spur-of-the-moment idea.”

Chuckles accompany whistles of support.

“A lot of my life has been spur-of-the-moment ideas bundled together in long hiatus of risky adventures.” He struts to the tarp and places a hand on top. “I wouldn’t trade any of my adventures. I’ve had an awesome life of traveling the countryside.”

“I’d travel anywhere with him,” a woman says behind us.

“Do you want me to kick her ass?” Billie says quietly to me.

I shake my head, but I can’t tear my eyes away from Johnny.

“I’ve come to a time in my life where my adventures are shifting. No ending. Just shifting. I no longer have the desire to ride alone. I have a special woman, and we have a lifetime of adventures to do together. Which is where y’all come in.” He rips off the tarp, and underneath is Emerald. “I’m auctioning off my baby, so someone else can enjoy her. Bidding starts at one hundred dollars.”

“Two hundred!” the woman behind me shouts.

“Three hundred!” a man across the circle yells.

“Four hundred!”

“Five hundred!”

My head whips between the bidders. Johnny’s going to lose his bike.

The folded paper from Bay burns in my hand. I glance down at the number.

I didn’t buy you that number for no reason. Use it.
