“Coulter Holt, don’t you dare,” I laugh.

Cole looks down at me, his tooth-paste ad smile plastered on his face. “I love you, Kate.”

“I love you.”

“Come on, we’re going to be late.”

“Oh,” I pout, “you’re not going to tire me out to the point of exhaustion?”

“Don’t tempt me.”

Luke meets us at the elevator. “Good morning, Kate.”

“Good morning, Luke. Um—Luke, are you going with me this morning?”

“No, Morgan is. Is that all right?”

“Oh sure, that’s great, but could you tell him how to get to Classic Remake?”

A rare smile crosses his face. “Of course.”

Outside the villa, there are two Escalades waiting. Cole walks me over to the first one. “I have meetings until about eight this evening. We’re signing the papers for Prescott-Holt.”

“Signing papers?”

“Yes, Kit, Race and I are buying out my father’s shares, but there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out. Call me if you need anything. Today is really important. I don’t want to make you feel like I’m putting you second, but this is really big for me, for us.”

“I understand. I hope everything goes the way you want.”

“Me too, baby, me too.” Cole kisses me and then helps me in the car.

Morgan doesn’t stay in the car, like Luke. But there are two security guys, a driver, Dane, and then Morgan, who follows me into the shop.

“Hey, Kate,” Donna says when I walk into the store.

“Hi Donna, how are you?”

“I’m great. Back in Las Vegas so soon?”

“Yes, um—my husband has business here, so we’re in town for a while. We left for a couple of days, but I didn’t pack enough clothes, so I’m back.”

“That’s great. Let me know if there’s anything you need help with.”

I meander around the store. I find several skirts and a couple of blouses to try on. On my way back to the dressing rooms, I spot what looks like a rack of costumes. I hang the clothes in a dressing room and come back to look at them. “Hey Donna, what’s with all the weird costumes?” There are a couple of show girl outfits, a Spiderman and even a Batman costume.

Donna comes up to the rack. “There are a lot of locals who try to make extra money by standing on the strip or down on Freemont Street, taking pictures with tourists and getting tip money, so I carry a variety. I just got these in this morning. They will all be gone by tomorrow.”

“Wow, I guess if you need the money, that’s one way to earn it.”

“Yeah, I’ve even got a sexy Elvis costume for women with white boots.”

“Oh really? I need to see that.”

An hour later, Morgan helps me out to the car with what feels like a new wardrobe, plus a couple of extra things. I feel sick at how much I spent in there. My stomach is still churning. But I need to do my part. This makes Cole happy, so I’ll make an effort, even if it makes me want to vomit. Dane gets out of the car and takes my bags, and then helps Morgan stow everything in the back of the SUV.

“Is there anywhere else you’d like to go, Mrs. Holt?”

“No, I’m ready to go home. Thank you, Morgan.”
