I ignore the outburst. “I included a blanket and our t-shirts, so the fabric smells like us. I’ve read that’s what dogs need to feel safe.”

The explanation makes her frown. She wants to hate me so damn bad, but anytime I’m good to that pooch, the hatred fades more and more.

Not gonna lie, I’m a manipulative bastard and will use him all I can to help get in her good graces.

One more thing.

The most important thing.

I slide out the square blue velvet box from my pocket. Her stuttered breath confirms she knows exactly what is inside. I pop the lid and show her the enormous diamond nestled in the slot. She gasps, never taking her gaze off the square rock. “I know you’re pissed at me. I deserve it. But I do want to marry you and before you start busting my balls, I need you to wear this for dinner tonight with Maxim.”

Huge emerald eyes study me trying to figure out what I’m talking about. “Chels told him you’re my fiancée. I can’t look like a chump who doesn’t even give his woman a massive stone.”

Succulent lips burst open. I don’t let her mount an argument. “If you told me that night what was going on, I wouldn’t have to handle the situation like this. You owe me.”

Scarlet explodes on her face, and she shakes her head. “That’s…You’re…”

She sucks in a huge breath. Doesn’t work. Fury still radiates off her as she gasps trying to form words. “Horrible.”

Interestingly enough, I catch on real quick that she doesn’t say no. I step closer and grasp her trembling hand. Silent as I slide the engagement ring on her delicate finger, she glances from the jewelry to me as if waiting for an explanation. I give her one.

“I never thought I’d want a wife. Then I met you and everything changed. It’s like bam, holy shit, this fireball has fucked me up hard. And I love it. More than I ever imagined. So, I’m going to marry you and do everything I can to eventually make you glad that I did.”

Her entire body shudders now. Yet no response comes. Just a blank expression I can’t decipher. “I love you, Addie.”

I wrap my hand around her neck and haul her to me, relishing her small body shivering in my embrace. Soon her convulsions will be from desire rather than rage. “I will make you happy.”

I mean it too.

Flowers, clothes, stuff for Pete. Whatever she wants, she can have. I will gladly give her. If she doesn’t ask, I’ll still give it to her. I kiss the top of her head. “I’m sure you’re both hungry. Mrs. Z’s cooking so you better get in there before Chels wipes out all the brownies.”

My girl will resist just to prove a point, so I don’t wait for an argument from her. I click my tongue at Pete and wave him over. “Come on buddy. Let’s get you something to eat.”

Obedient unlike his owner, he ceases sniffing his new pillow, and trots after me as I depart. Without any choice but to follow, Addie falls in line and trails after us.

Luckily, she can’t see my smug ass grin, satisfied that my plan is working perfectly.

Addie

As much as I hate Titan being right, the food helps. My brain and my body are exhausted, but the incredible chicken sandwich Mrs. Zirkelbach gave me boosts my energy. I never knew food could taste this good. She seems pleased when I tell her so. She’s a nice lady. I feel bad she has to put up with Titan.

Although I have to admit he’s respectful to the housekeeper, even saying thank you when she told him she would bring his lunch to his office since he had meetings. Or at least that’s what he claims.

I think he just wanted to get away from his sister, who called him a jerk-face when we walked in the kitchen and hasn’t stopped complaining about him since he raced out. Well after she lost her mind over my engagement ring, which she believes is really going to lead to a wedding.

After a few minutes of screaming and applauding and twirling, it was back to bashing him.

“Then he told me I better not be opening my legs for anyone, that I’m too good for that. Isn’t that gross?”

I nod. It is gross but he’s a rough man living in a dangerous world. “I agree he could have worded it nicer, but he loves you and wants to make sure no one is using you. He wants you to find a good guy who will treat you well.”

God.

What the hell?

Why am I defending him?

He’s also a cruel asshole who lashes out when he’s mad. I glance at the huge diamond ring on my finger. He’s also crazy, generous, and evil. Who blackmails someone into marrying him?
