“I love you, fireball.”

I hate myself when my heart swells from hearing those words from his mouth. In his own twisted way, I think he really does. But I’m too scared to believe they’re enough to keep him from destroying me again.

Titan

Without uttering a single word the entire ride home, Addie still tells me everything I need to know. She’s conflicted, wanting to be mad, both at me and herself. But her lack of yelling confirms she’s happier here with us rather than at that dump all alone.

Although Pete’s not confused at all. Oblivious to the tension between us, he snuggles in, snoring until we park in front of the house. Only waking and instantly following her when she scampers out of the vehicle, not waiting for any assistance, and runs straight into the arms of my sister.

Guilt pricks me from Chelsea’s swollen eyes and splotchy face. I’ve fixed one problem bringing Addie back where she belongs. Solving the issue with Maxim won’t be as easy.

Her mistake is a huge fucking deal I didn’t expect and sure as hell don’t need. She can be pissed at me all she wants. Her anger doesn’t negate the fact that she fucked up too.

“Please don’t ever leave again.”

Addie glances back at me over her shoulder from the tearful plea. Unable to read her expression, I nod. Not that I’m indifferent to whatever message she’s trying to send me. I know I hurt her. I hurt Chels. I hurt Pete.

It won’t happen again, and I’ll prove it to all of them.

“Don’t worry sis. Addie’s never going anywhere. This is her home.”

Chelsea beams.

Addie grimaces.

Pete pants.

It’s time to go inside.

I stride up the steps and into the foyer. Thank fuck for air conditioning.

The rich scent of chocolate floats through the cool air. Mrs. Z is trying to cheer Chels up. Luckily, I’ve beat her to the punch with my fireball home.

Slow as hell, the girls follow me into the house. Chels heads towards the kitchen for her brownies while Addie turns the opposite direction.

I know she’s going to hide in her room. Obviously unwelcomed, I still follow her.

She jogs down the hallway never acknowledging me. With my long legs, I easily keep close to her and catch up less than a second after she opens the bedroom door. After a brief scan of the space, she twists back to face me.

“What’s all this?”

Her words are breathless and not from her sprint. I love shocking her.

I point to the huge bouquet sitting on the nightstand. “That’s to say I’m sorry. Isn’t that what men do when they fuck up?”

As if mesmerized, she glides to the vase stuffed with sunflowers, tulips, roses, and carnations. Her eyes fall shut as she takes a deep breath.

“They’re beautiful. No one’s ever given me flowers before.”

The possessive demon inside me surges from her words. Another first—all for me.Mine.“I’m glad you like them.”

My intention is to sound casual. I fail. The hunger gnawing in me for her burns harder from her pleased tone. She hears the hoarseness in my voice too and spins around, her body coiled tight with skepticism. Obvious from her rigid stance, I’m going to have to work my ass off to earn her trust again. “Now that I know how much you like them, I’ll fill the house with them for you.”

When she doesn’t respond except for crossing her arms in defiance, I keep going and nod toward the huge gray and red plaid cushion in the corner. “The dog bed is for Pete. He’ll need a place to stay when we’re fucking.”

“That’s never happening again.”

Her arms drop down with her tiny hands curling into fists. She’s cute when she tries to be vicious.
