Dr. C sighs from the doorway. “Because you’re supposed to be recovering, not shuffling around the house on a broken ankle.”

The admonishment upsets Bax like usual. If he wasn’t holding onto his crutches, he’d cross his arms and pout. “I just wanted to make sure Mr. G’s all right.”

Doc shakes his head. “Neither of you is all right. You should go back to bed.” He nods toward my advisor. “And you should leave him alone.”

The bathroom door bursts open, and Chels stomps out. “Were you just going to leave me in there all day?”

Jesus. Why is my life such a fuck up? I’ve got everyone in here except for the one person I want.

I growl at my sister. Her mouth opens to argue, but I shut that shit down quick. “Go get Addie.”

All four of us men flinch from her scream. I’m too bad off to tell if that’s her happy or sad or angry shriek but I’m thrilled when she flies out of the room. Silence. Thank fuck.

I point to Bax first. “My girl’s coming so go get some rest. I’m going to need you later.”

I’m not but he doesn’t know that and is quick to struggle to his feet. With him taken care of, I motion to the physician. “Get me something so I don’t vomit.”

He leaves too, hopefully only temporarily so I can get some relief. Jace waits for his directives, stepping closer once we’re alone.

“How’s Maxim?”

“The shot was clean through so he’s fine. He’s asking for your sister. Doesn’t want to wait until tonight to see her.”

Jace doesn’t roll his eyes, but if he did, that’s exactly what he’d be doing right now. His tone reflects his repulsion for a man basing his decisions on a woman.

A few weeks ago I would’ve wholeheartedly agreed. Now—with Addie—I already know she’ll impact me too in such a powerful way. I’ll always have her safety—physically and mentally—in mind.

“He’s losing his shit trying to figure out who’s behind the attack but I already suspect his brother.”

I nod in encouragement of his speculation, which I instantly regret when the bed spinners kick in again. I roll my finger for him to talk while I suck in big gulps of oxygen. He’s fully aware I’m not 100% but I don’t want him to know how fucked I really am right now.

“Kirill contacted me three months ago about an alliance between the two of you, making it very clear Maxim wasn’t included or aware. I turned him down of course.”

Normally I would appreciate Jace not wasting my time with such requests. Well aware I would never consider any type of partnership.

Hind sight’s twenty-twenty for sure. Jace’s failure to meet my gaze, as hazy as it is, reflects his guilt. That’s enough reprimand. Because even I’m smart enough to realize I would have penalized him severely if he’d brought the offer to me at the time.

Another realization pops into my bleary head. Who knew a concussion would be so enlightening? “That’s about the time he became obsessed with my sister from what Ramos was able to find. Kirill probably knew it and wanted to take advantage while he was distracted.”

Jace slowly looks up. “Yeah, a woman can definitely divert a man’s attention from his business.”

He chooses his words carefully, walking a very fine line to remind me of my situation without insulting me. “Only if he lets it.”

We’ve both made our point. He shared his concern, and I didn’t kill him. Good conversation. “Contact Kirill now. Tell him I’ve reconsidered and want revenge against his brother because of Chels. Then once we pump him for all the information we need, we’ll dispose of him.”

“Got it boss.”

The perfect solution to eliminate an enemy and get more intel on Maxim. After Jace strides out, I get antsy. Why the hell isn’t Addie here?

I shove off the comforter and swing my legs to the side. Chunks threaten to blow, and I start to pant. Shit. I’m fucking pathetic.

“Hey! What’re you doing?”

My magnificent angel sweeps in, frowning at me as she starts shoving at me to lie down. She’s small yet determined, and I can’t help but laugh as she pushes me backward with all her strength. “Okay, okay. I’ll let you fuck me fireball. Just climb on and ride me.”

Now I get her pissed face as she drapes blankets over me. “You arenotfunny.”

Maybe not but her blazing cheeks tell me she’s as interested in the idea as I am. “I’m glad you’re back.”
