I shake off my daze and focus my vision out the window. Right in the middle of the parking lot, I see a tall man and a small kid in all black.

Benny!

All thoughts of Reese evaporate from my mind when I watch in absolute horror as the tall man raises a hand and brings it down hard against the side of Benny’s head.

“No!” I scream out before I rush out of the back door, running as fast as my legs can carry me to get to Benny.

With all the strength I have, I shove the man away from Benny and stand in between them.

“Miss, no! You have to leave!” Benny tries to push me away, but when I look down, I can see tears in his eyes.

“I’m not going anywhere, Benny!” I jerk the child behind me and out of danger.

“You need to listen to the little shit. This has nothing to do with you. What I do with my son is not your concern,” the man spits.

His son. This piece of shit is Benny’s father, Brian McGee. “The moment you put your hands on him, it became my concern. You need to get the hell off this property. Best believe I’ll be calling the cops to let them know what kind of waste of a man you are,” I snarl at him.

“Do you know who I am? I wouldn’t threaten me if I were you. This isn’t a fight you want, little girl.” Brian gets closer to me.

“No, but it damn sure is a fight I want.”

My eyes dart over Brian’s shoulder. Behind him, I see Reese stalking forward like an animal ready to pounce.

For a microsecond, I feel bad for Benny’s dad. One look at Reese and I know Benny’s dad won’t be the same when this is all said and done.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

REESE

Showing up at the community center, the last thing I thought I’d be seeing is a man getting in Haven’s face. I recognize him from back in the day.

Brian McGee.

Growing up, he thought he was hot shit. A jock who figured he could get away with anything. But unfortunately for him, he was never able to win against me.

Seeing him now, getting in Haven’s face the way he is, doesn’t sit well with me. Especially what he said to her about a fight against him. I don’t know what all that means, but if it involves Haven, then I’m not about to let this dickhead hurt her. Not fucking happening.

I stalk the rest of the way over to them and put myself in front of Haven.

“Reese,” she says softly.

Hearing her voice is somewhat soothing to the rage and fury inside me. I’d come here to talk to her. Tell her everything she deserves the right to know. All thoughts of that went out the window seeing her in a confronting situation with a man twice her size.

“Reese fuckin’ Dyer,” Brian sneers, eyeing me up and down. “You nailing this bitch now?”

“You can shut the hell up and back away. Actually, I suggest you leave and do whatever it is Haven said before I knock the shit out of you,” I suggest, clenching my teeth together.

“I’m not about to do shit. She needs to be minding her own fuckin’ business,” he says, reaching out to shove a hand against my shoulder that doesn’t even send me back a step. “In fact, I think I might lodge a complaint against her.”

“I wouldn’t suggest you do that,” I mutter, narrowing my eyes at him as I step into his space.

“Why? What are you gonna do about it? Huh? You some big shot now? Think you’re better than the rest of us? I don’t think so.” He cackles, shaking his head and putting both hands up to shove me. This time, I allow myself to go back a step. “Think I might take a shot at the champ. Bring you back down off your high horse.”

He goes to shove me again, but this time, I grab him by the collar of his shirt and shove him with enough force to send him stumbling back until he falls to the floor. Brian scampers to his feet and rushes me.

Game fucking on, asshole.

I know I probably shouldn’t, but I’ve been itching for a fight for a while, and not against my brother. Brian throws a punch, and I duck, missing it. I throw one of my own, and he barely gets out of the way. When he goes to hit me again, I step sideways and slam a fist in the guy’s gut. The glare Brian gives me as he doubles over must be the one he gives others who he wants to fear him. That shit is not about to happen with me. Brian rushes me once more, and I land a solid punch against the asshole’s jaw, sending him to the ground.
