Page 27 of Finding Reese

Breathing heavily, I take a step back, flexing my fingers, adrenaline coursing through my veins.

“Reese?”

I let out a harsh breath and slowly turn to face the woman who called my name. Behind her, I spot an older gentleman making his way in our direction, but I ignore him and focus on Haven.

“You okay?” I ask, stepping toward her.

“Yes. You didn’t have to do that,” she says, glancing around me to where Brian is getting off the floor. “I was handling the situation just fine.”

“Haven, is everything okay here?” the older gentleman asks, eyes locked on me. “The police will be here in just a few moments.”

Great.

Here we go again. I’ll be arrested, but this time, I’ll gladly take the charges since it was the right thing to do. The bastard had it coming.

“Everything’s fine, Luke,” she says as I pull out my phone.

I shoot Kai a text message and ask him to come to the community center, telling him that I have another situation.

It’s true, and maybe I took it to the extreme because of the shit I’ve been dealing with.

“Doesn’t seem that way,” Luke states, his arms crossing as he narrows his gaze. “Would someone like to fill me in on what’s going on here?”

“I’m sorry, Luke,” Haven says and goes on to explain what happened between her and Brian and how he’d gotten in my face when I told him to do as Haven suggested.

After about ten minutes of explaining and Haven answering Luke’s questions, I spot two officers making their way toward us. Kai’s right behind them.

I’ve got to admit he made it here a lot quicker than I thought it would take him, considering his office is on the other side of town. I’ll have to ask him about it. But regardless, I’m glad he’s here.

I recognize the two officers. One of them is Phoenix’s brother, Orion. The other I know but don’t remember his name. I just know we went to school together.

“We received a call about a fight,” Orion says, his gaze coming to mine briefly, then down to Brian, who’s scampering to his feet.

Luke speaks up first, telling them what happened, and Haven then explains everything and how Brian provoked me into a fight. Kai moves to stand next to me while listening to the whole ordeal. By the time Haven finishes, Brian has joined the crowd, his eyes narrowed on Haven.

Kai is the next to open his mouth. “It seems here that this is a case of my client defending himself, after which he sees his woman getting accosted by one of the parents.”

Thank fuck for him.

Orion calls my name and tells me to come with him for a moment. Kai joins us, and I wait, bracing for whatever he’s about to do. “Look, after hearing what’s happened, I’m not taking you in. McGee put his hands on you first, but that doesn’t mean he won’t try to press charges.”

“Don’t worry about Brian McGee,” Kai states. “I’ll handle him and make sure he regrets his actions here today.”

I notice his smirk, and a grin forms on my own lips.

“Maybe, but what about keeping this from the media? Won’t this get you in trouble?” Orion remarks.

I lose the grin and sigh. I am about to say something when Kai stops me.

“I’ll also make sure that Brian doesn’t take this to the media. We don’t need more drama than we already have.”

“Thanks, man.” I nod, grateful to have him at my back. “By the way, how did you get here as quick as you did?”

Kai smirks and shrugs. “Was at the restaurant down the street with Marcella.”

That explains his quick appearance. Otherwise, I’d swear he had some mad-skill superhero shit going on.

Now, I need to worry about speaking with Haven and seeing how she reacts to this whole situation on top of what I’ve got to tell her. I hope it doesn’t come back to bite me on the ass.
