Colette smiled, pleased with herself.

Nick gathered up all the clothing in his high vaulted ceiling living room, the two purses and, in his bedroom, flung open the curtains. He shook the blonde woman and then the brunette.

“Up girls, it’s been fun, but you must leave now, sorry.” The brunette, whose name was an M, scowled at him.

“You insisted on taking us back to your place.”

“Yes, I did. And you said yes.” Nick grabbed her wrist, pulling her close to his body. She flinched her wrist out of his grip.

“Whatever. I’m out of here. Come on, Winona, let’s go.”

“I’ll come back anytime,” the blonde Winona said, rubbing herself against Nick.

“Let’s get out of here” the other woman tossed clothing at her friend, and Nick breathed a sigh of relief as they got dressed without further protest.

“Yes, see you again,” Nick said to them at the door.

“You are a busy man, aren’t you?” Winona batted her eyes at him, looking at him from his sister.

Nick felt bile in his stomach.

“That’s right. Bye, girls,” he called.

They giggled and waved bye, and Nick turned to his sister, who raised a cool eyebrow at him.

“Very, very busy. You know Maman will say it’s time to settle down.”

“And you know, I am going to say, no, it isn’t,” Nick said.

Collette shook her head. “You can’t escape the family, Nicky. No matter what game you’ve played.”

Nick poured his coffee.

This playboy lifestyle was getting a little irritating.

But his policy had always been no dating, no long-term commitments.

He didn’t want women to come for him because of who his family was.

He tried to duck his family’s fame and name for years. But since being out of the army, it had been more challenging to fend them off.

He had joined Laurent Industries as a part-time consultant. He knew what was going on and what products they were launching. He thought that was a good compromise.

“And how is that husband of yours?”

“Phil and I are fine,” Colette said, her expression tight.

“Are you sure you want to be married to an investment broker?”

“His family is rich. So is ours. We belong together.”

Nick shook his head. He couldn’t tell if his sister was joking or not.

He suspected she was, and she’d bide her time in the marriage she found tolerable for long enough to seal whatever deal their father wanted her to close.

It was barbaric and archaic, but that was the Laurent way.

Three sharp knocks rang out, and Nick hurried to the door.
