“He’s not with me,” Mulberry said, accepting Patrick’s arm. She stuck her tongue out at Dylan and walked side by side with Patrick.

Yes, some things never changed. At the end of the day, she was just Grace Stevens’ bratty daughter, who had that whole unpleasant kidnapping thing happen to her.

Mulberry sighed.

Someday she’d show them differently.

CHAPTER FOUR – NICK

Nick swore softly as the knocking on his door continued, a steadying rapt, rapt, rapt. Running a hand over his face, he fumbled for his glasses but couldn’t find them in the clutter on his nightstand.

“One minute!” Nick threw on a pair of jeans, wincing as he flipped on the light in the living room.

He had gone a little wild at Club Bandit last night, and his body protested the intrusion to sleep.

Seeing the small black leather purse on his counter sent a wave of dread through him.

Damn, he used to have a policy of not taking the women he played with at the club home, but ever since bringing Karina home, he’d gone from one distraction to the next.

Another purse was strung over a chair. It’s a wonder, Megan? Marcy? could sleep through the racket at the door with the other one, Wendy? Winnie?

Nick checked the security the old-fashioned way.

He looked through his peephole.

And groaned.

Standing outside his door, all five foot two of her, was his sister Colette.

He wasn’t in the mood.

“Go away!” He called.

“Nicky, stop it. Let me in.” The high pitch of her voice was too much to take at the moment.

He unlocked the door, and his sister, in a puff of fruity perfume with her long blonde hair to her waist, brushed past him.

“Nice to see you.”

“Hey, you know mornings aren’t my thing.” Nick closed the door.

In the kitchen, he threw a pod into his coffee maker.

“What brings you by the neighbourhood?”

Colette snorted as if one of the wealthiest square footage in the nation was offensive to her.

“To come to see you, why else would I be here?” Using the handle of a spoon, Collette moved a bra off the back of a chair. “Nice digs. Dad sure spoiled you.”

“It’s okay,” Nick shrugged as if the three-bedroom penthouse with views of the North Shore were only tolerable. “He had this condo just sitting empty.”

“It’s cute that you think that” Colette placed a hand on his chest.

“You saw me. You can tell the parents I’m well. Now, go.”

“Okay, Nicky, good to see you,” Collette stood on her toes and kissed his cheek. “But you might want to kick whatever girl is in your room out before Maman comes,” Colette flicked her wrist, dramatically glancing at her gold-encrusted diamond Cartier watch. “In about five minutes. She’s trying to find parking.”

“Câlisse, Colette!”
