It didn’t matter. He had to get Mulberry.

Running back into the apartment, he shouted, “Mulberry! It’s safe to come out!”

The bedroom door opened, Mulberry came out, Emma clutching Mulberry’s arm.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, ma belle.”

Nick wrapped his arms around her, breathing in her scent. This is where she belonged.

“What is going on out there?” Mulberry asked.

“I’m not sure, but I can find out.”

“Where’s my Dad?” Emma asked. “He was supposed to be here.”

“Nick?” Logan called, rounding the corner to the room. “The police are here. Sheldon Pierce is trying to get up here, but they aren’t letting him.”

“Why?” Emma asked. “Why aren’t they letting him up here?”

Mulberry reached out and squeezed her hand. “You said these guys were his stuntmen?”

“Yes,” Emma said.

“I don’t think they are,” Mulberry said.

Emma looked from Mulberry to him and Logan frantically.

“Mulberry?” She asked.

“I don’t know… do we know for sure?” She asked Nick.

He shook his head.

“But these guys tried to take me again. I’m not sure what that means.”

Emma’s face paled. “It can only mean one thing, right?”

And she crumbled to the floor.

“Let me in here, dammit!” Another voice rang out.

“Dylan?” Emma called.

“Yeah, I’m here. You okay?” The assistant bellowed.

“I don’t know. Did you know any of this?” Emma asked.

Dylan closed his eyes briefly. “Your dad, this job, it means a lot to me. I’m loyal to him.”

Nick moved to swing at Dylan, but Mulberry stepped in front of him.

“Seriously, Dylan? You knew Sheldon was behind my kidnapping?”

“I’m sorry,” Dylan said.

“Mulberry, let’s go,” Nick said.
