“Mom!”

Nick’s throat grew tight as he watched them hug. Two bodyguards from Stone Security silently followed behind Grace.

“Thanks for keeping her safe,” Grace said.

“I did my best. Call me later, Mulberry.”

“Sure,” she said.

“Okay,” Nick sipped his hands in his pockets, doing his best to appear casual and relaxed, but his heart broke inside.

He wished he could go back to this morning, before all this chaos and wrap her in his arm, breathing in her scent, sinking deep into her warm, supple body and staying there.

Nick fixed his stare straight ahead and strode out the back doors.

“Yes, I’m on my way, okay?” He barked at his dad.

“Good.”

Pulling out of the driveway, he noticed three police cruisers, several tv station vans, and a helicopter flying overhead. This was going to be a media circus that Mulberry didn’t want.

But she headed right into it, so maybe she did want that kind of attention all along. Nick exhaled, pushing Mulberry out of his mind.

“So what’s the plan?” Nick strolled into Xander’s black box office at eleven o’clock that night.

Xander looked p. “Nick, I wasn’t expecting you.”

A cough came from beside him, and Nick took a step back, seeing Harper kneeling beside Xander’s chair.

“Sorry to interrupt.”

“I don’t think you are,” Xander said, sitting back.

He ran a hand through his hair, opening his suit jacket.

“Xander, tell me what the plan is! Did you see that media mob? We have to do something. And what if the police don’t have Sheldon in custody yet? Is it even a matter for our police, or must it be done in California?”

The words tumbled out of him.

“Angel, can you get Nick some water? He clearly needs to cool down.”

“Of course,” Graceful as ever, Harper rose to her feet, tucking down an oversized men’s shirt over her curves.

“I don’t want water!”

Xander raised an eyebrow at him, gesturing to the club chair in front of his desk. Nick plopped down with his head in his hands.

“I can’t believe how fast this blew up. For almost a year, the kidnapping goes unsolved and suddenly, we know it’s Sheldon?”

“Your constant public appearances with Mulberry did what she hoped. It made her impossible to ignore. "

“Thanks,” Nick mumbled as Harper passed him a water bottle. He uncapped it and guzzled it down.

“Okay, so what’s the exit plan? She still needs protection, right?”

“I believe Stone Security is meeting her close protection needs,” Xander said.
