“Want to get out of here?”

“Please,” she could barely get the word out.

Her body hummed with want.

He took her jacket from the hook on the wall, helped her into it.

The blaze in his eyes was an odd juxtaposition with the act of covering her up.

“I’m going to get this off of you as soon as possible. In fact, I’m going to get it all off you, every last single layer. What do you think of that, little cat?”

She swallowed and nodded, unable to speak.

Taking her hand in his, he led her outside in the lightly falling snow.

“It’s two more steps,” Nick said, amusement in his tone.

“I’m fine.”

Lies.

She wasn’t fine.

Cold, yes.

But she was a bundle of nerves, a mess of non-syllable sensations that needed to explode.

He opened the car door for her, buckled her in and as soon as he slid into the driver’s seat, he blasted the heat, dialling her seat heat to full blast.

“Thanks.”

“Of course.”

Nick pulled out of the driveway. Mulberry glanced out the window, tension infusing every limb. She wasn’t sure what to do.

He put a hand on her thigh.

She covered his hand with hers, reassured by the weight of it.

“I hated being away from you.”

She swallowed against the lump in her throat. “I’m sorry. I wish I hadn’t pushed you away. I just needed space. To get my head around it. I still haven’t. I want to believe this is true more than anything, but I’m scared.”

“I would have given you space, Mulberry. I will give you whatever you need.”

“I know. I don’t want to be without you anymore. I was worried you wouldn’t show up.”

As they drove along the highway, she stared at him, then out the window, then at him.

“So we can agree to not be away from each other ever again,” he said in his bossy tone.

“That simple?”

“Yes.”

“Okay,” Mulberry’s heart thumped against her ribs. She wanted to be out of this car, in his arms again.

“You’re going to listen to me from now on?” He growled.
