“We were cautious in buying the house. My sister actually bought it for us. When I knew I would be working on this series, we wanted our home here, permanently. And now look.”

Her mom rambled when she was upset.

“I’m fine,” Mulberry said.

Yeah, completely fine. Dealing with flashbacks and panic attacks.

All her senses seemed to be on overdrive, the tight ball in her stomach wouldn’t unfurl, but she was fine.

“No honey, you’re not. I want personal protection for Mulberry until this is over, Mr. Montague. Or I can quit, Mulberry.”

That’s the last thing she wanted.

It was bad enough her own plans had been derailed because of the abduction.

But her mom had put her career on hold.

She wasn’t going to let her mom sit out when they were just getting back to living life.

Mulberry squeezed her mom’s hand. “No, you can’t do that. You lost too much because of me.”

“It wasn’t because of you, Mulberry,” Xander said, his calm voice spinning around her like a blanket. “Don’t ever blame yourself for what happened.”

“I work on that in therapy,” Mulberry smiled.

He gave her a thin smile in return and nodded his head. “Glad to hear it.”

“We don’t offer close protection services anymore. I can refer you to Stone Security. They are excellent,” Xander stared at her mother, clearly used to getting his way.

“No. I want you to handle it, Mr. Montague. You brought my daughter back, and you know her case. If this is connected to the kidnapping, I know you’ll figure it out.”

“I know, Grace, but I sold the personal protection side of the business to Stone Security, so all of the bodyguards Mulberry has worked with before are there.”

Her mother shook her head, pointing her world-famous glare toward Mr. Montague.

“I need Axis Management to handle it.”

“Mom, anyone is fine,” Mulberry said.

She just wanted her mom to get back to acting.

“I thought you might feel like that, Grace. There are always exceptions. I have arranged for someone Mulberry already knows to be her detail. He was part of the team when you returned for that product launch.”

Mulberry’s belly danced in her stomach, and she clenched her jaw.

She remembered the two bodyguards who shadowed her for that event.

One had a shaved head, was kind and cordial to her and didn’t say much.

The one other, with his piercing green eyes and black curly hair, talked to her as if she were something on the bottom of his shoe.

Mulberry had met many stuck-up people through her mother’s connections, and that guy? A total snob.

“Great,” Grace nodded. “Thank you, Mr. Montague.”

Xander picked up his tablet as the door opened. “And here he is now. Meet Nick Laurent.”

At seeing him, Mulberry closed her eyes, like this day could get any worse.
