The snobby asshole had walked into the room.

“Laurent? As in Laurent Industries?” Grace said, “Hello, Mulberry, Ms. Stevens” Nick stood next to Xander’s chair. “Yes, I am Henri’s son.”

“You’re a bodyguard?” her mom asked.

Nick smiled. “I have many skills.”

Mulberry flushed, glancing away from the six-foot-two, curly-haired, dark-eyed Nick.

Her heart fluttered.

He might look yummy, but he was also an ass.

Unfortunately, her body didn’t care about his personality.

“Until the break-in is solved, Nick will be Mulberry’s personal bodyguard. Do you know where you will stay until the repairs to your house are finished?”

“Yes, with my sister’s friend,” Grace said.

Cynthia had generously offered her house to them.

“I’ll send people over to get the layout of the place then,” Xander said, “and we’ll make a plan. Grace, you might want to consider extra security for yourself too. I’m happy to arrange that with Stone Security. And it’s best if you are out of sight, Mulberry, for the time being.”

“Great! Thank you so much, Xander! Nick, is there any way I can get my name on the list for the early release of the supersonic laptop?”

Nick smiled and gave a shrug. “For you, Ms.Stevens? I’ll see what I can do.”

Mulberry shifted in her seat. Why did she find that one-shoulder shrug so damn sexy?

“Okay, Mulberry, we’ll have people get your stuff from your mom’s house and then we’ll take you to a safe location.”

Suddenly, the room felt tiny.

Mulberry gulped down a cup of water.

They were talking about her one moment; the next, her mom asked about a laptop, and then they arranged for her to be shuttled somewhere else as if she wasn’t even there.

“No.”

The word spat out from her mouth had the immediate effect of sucking up all the words, bringing the conversation to a halt in the room.

Behind his ultra-trendy frames, Nick glared at her.

“What do you mean? Do you want to stay with Emma and Sheldon? Maybe we can arrange security at the hotel.” Her mom looked at Xander, who nodded.

Mulberry pushed up from the chair. “No, I mean, I am not going to hide away.”

She hated the wobble in her voice.

Forcing herself to take a deep breath, she tried to picture something calming.

Her grandparents’ orange grove in full bloom came to mind.

“They took too much from me, mom. And keeping me out of the spotlight clearly hasn’t worked. I don’t want to keep putting my life or your career on hold.”

“Mulberry, we have to be safe!”

“But do we have to hide me away?”
