“I think we should go farther from the village,” Logan said, looking at the map.

“Yeah, maybe try the houses along the crest of the hill here” Erik followed a map line.

Nick tried another audio enhancer, ignoring the images, he threw on the headphones. “Come on.”

Realizing the accent was throwing him off, he cranked the volume to the max and ran it through another program.

This program still had glitches he hadn’t worked out, but what the hell. He started the software he’d designed to reduce accents and played it again.

On his screen, a fisherman accepted a package from the guy on the motorcycle. He listened again, running the syllables through his head.

Nick thumped the table in jubilance.

“Got you, finally!” Nick pushed back his chair so hard it fell to the floor.

“What is it, Laurent?” Logan asked.

“The kid is on the boat.”

“Let’s roll,” Logan said.

His friends didn’t question him, these guys had been through a lot together, and if Nick said the kid was on the boat, they’d act now and ask questions later.

They found Quinn packing up equipment from the truck and filled him in.

Less than an hour, they had the kid.

The kid yelled and protested until they had him loaded on a plane for home.

“Save it for your father,” Logan said.

The kid crowed and stayed quiet.

Nick stared out the window, feeling kind of smug.

He’d waited for an opportunity to try out that accent-reducing software.

It was the kind of thing his father would want.

Logan squeezed Nick’s shoulder as he walked to the back of the plane, carrying a cup of hot chocolate. Nick slid out of his seat and followed him.

Logan handed the kid the cup.

“Thanks,” the surly teen mumbled.

Logan sat across from him, leaning towards him, resting his hands on his legs, all casual-like.

Nick sat next to Logan, keeping his hands on the armrests.

Across from them, Quinn stayed where he was, but Erik turned his seat, facing them.

“So, how did you find the guys?” Logan asked.

“What guys?” the absadoor’s son stared stonily at him.

“The guys you hired to abduct you.”

The kid shrugged. “It wasn’t that hard.”
