If she had any innocence that had been trampled on back there on that June day, like Nick’s chosen family had forever changed with the loss of Jordan.

Surreal how that event connected them.

The lights dimmed, and the band started to play a lively waltz.

Nick gritted his teeth. He’d have to dance with her, hold her close make it look like she was his girlfriend.

He’d rather stick needles in his eyes.

Mulberry emerged from the bathroom, her smile wide, almost teasing. She grabbed his hand. “Lead on, lover, I love to dance!”

Of course, she did.

Nick placed his hand in hers, the heat between them seeming to build with every step to the dance floor.

He tried to keep distance between their bodies, but Mulberry stepped right up, slid her hands around his waist and leaned in so her mouth was near his ear.

“I’ve taken tons of dance classes. Did you?”

“Yes,” Nick placed his hand on her back, adjusted her fingers, and sped around the room. Her flowery smell went straight to his head. He wanted to run his hands through her long hair. The red parts of her hair shimmered under the lights.

As they floated by couples, everyone smiled at them.

Nick spun Mulberry around to get her away from his body for a step. But no good, effortlessly, she came back to him, and he held her close.

“Years of private school before I joined the army.”

“What did your parents think about that?”

Nick grinned. “Maman cried and hid in her bedroom for a week. Henri went years without talking to me.”

Until somehow, he heard about one of Nick’s last missions that were kind of dicey, and if it wasn’t for his friends, he wouldn’t be here.

His father may disagree with his choices, but he never abandoned Nick.

“That’s awful,” Mulberry said. “I talk to my parents, like every day.”

“He and I have never really got along, so it wasn’t a hardship.”

And Mamie kept in touch with him and his sister. He’d be lost without those two.

“What about your sister?”

“She wanted to use it for publicity. Henri told her no.” Nick pressed her against him, his hands on her hips.

Mulberry grinned. “I get the sense she’s a shark.”

“Yep.”

She laughed, resting her chin against his chest. Trailed her hand along his back. With the blood rushing to his cock, he swayed his hips.

“I’ll try to get on her good side.

“I’m sure she’ll be thrilled that I am no longer single. It won’t be hard.”

“Glad I saved you from your family’s meddling then,” Her lips quirked into a shy smile, and it was so damn cute, Nick couldn’t help but laugh.

“I still don’t think your plan of being in the open is a good one,” He held her closer against his hips, his hands cupping her ass as the beat changed.
