“Don’t expect it to happen again.”

CHAPTER TWELVE – MULBERRY

Ugh! Every time she thought Nick was softening towards her, he showed her that, nope, he was actually a jerk.

She rolled her eyes, took three steps back and glared at him.

“Fine. I don’t make the same mistake twice.” Though she gave him her best steely glare, she knew her cheeks were bright red.

Nick smiled, and his eyes raked her as if he could see how much she was lying.

Mulberry turned away from him, ignoring the tears gathering in her eyes.

That kiss had almost sent her flying.

The feel of his soft lips on hers had made her wet between her legs.

She wanted more.

Clutching her little bag tightly, she stared straight ahead.

The valet brought his sporty red car around, Nick opened the door for her, and she climbed in, buckling her seatbelt, as flashbulbs went off.

“Are you all right?”

Mulberry didn’t look at him, staring right out the windshield at the line of cars pulling out of the hotel. “Yes, that was okay.”

“I think you like the spotlight more than you claim,” Nick smirked.

Oh, God.

He looked at her as if he could see right through her. As if he knew her secrets, he froze the words in her throat.

He couldn’t know. Nobody did.

“I don’t! I’ve never sought it. I’m just used to it.”

Nick did that one shoulder shrug of his and cursed under his breath at the stop-and-go traffic filling downtown.

“How come you didn’t tell me about wanting to be a vet?”

Mulberry blinked at him. The man could throw so much cold water in her face and keep her off track it was utterly unnerving.

“It didn’t come up. Before the kidnapping, I was going to go to veterinary school. After my anxiety was so bad, I couldn’t do much. I think I’m ready to make plans, but it’s scary.”

Why was she telling Mr. Grumpy-jerk all of this?

His grip tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles white.

Nobody liked being reminded of the kidnapping, but she was happy to talk about it now without breaking out in a cold sweat or having a full-on panic attack.

Reaching into her purse for her phone, she returned a text to Grace.

Everything fine! Keeping with the plan of going to Nick’s for the night.

Nick drove to an underground garage of a thirty-one-story glass and steel building.

Stopping the car, Nick peered at her. “Home sweet home, let’s go.”
