“I agree. The press from the gala looks great. You two make a cute couple.”

“Yeah, I can’t wait till this is over,” Nick growled.

“Are you so eager to work for Henri?” Xander’s tone was mild and filled with insult.

“Asshole,” Nick murmured, hanging up on his boss.

He washed his hands, staring out at the predawn sky.

Mulberry’s absolute vulnerability and her helplessness got to him.

But that’s it.

There wasn’t anything personal between them.

Right, then, why did that kiss feel like it did?

By the door, he found Mulberry’s clutch. He opened the tiny bag, took out her worry bear keychain, stuffed it in his pocket, and poured a glass of water.

In the bedroom, he found Mulberry curled up on her side.

“Hey. Drink,” he passed her the glass of water.

“Thanks. Everything okay?”

He wanted to spare her this, wanted to lie to her, but he couldn’t.

“The Stone Security Team stopped a man from what they think is an attempt at a break-in or an attempt to….”

“Take me?” She bit her lip.

“You’re safe, Mulberry. Your mom, Cassie, and Cassie’s friend Cynthia are all fine too.”

“Here,” He put worry bear in her hand.

“Thanks,” Mulberry took a few sips of water and set the glass on the night table.

She moved her thumb slowly over her worry bear.

“Okay. I feel like I am going out of my skin.”

“I know. You’re safe right here. Come lie down,” Nick stretched out on the bed and patted the space next to him.

Mulberry shook her head, but after a moment, she laid down, curling her body around Nick’s.

“I hate that my aunt could have gotten hurt because of me.”

“Not because of you, Mulberry,” he couldn’t help it. He stroked her hair gently.

“I like that,” she bounced against him, and he placed a hand against her hip, stilling her.

“Mulberry.”

“That was a perfect kiss” her grey-blue eyes met his, and he saw desire swirl in her depths.

“It was unprofessional.” Nick pulled away from her, sitting on the edge of the bed.

“Consenting adults?”
