He grabbed her wrist. “Mulberry.”
“What?” Her eyes widened all innocently. “I told you, I liked that kiss.”
“And I told you it couldn’t happen again. Get in the car.”
She pouted, threw open the passenger door and slammed it shut.
“Do you pout and stomp to get your way?” Nick gritted, pulling out of the parking lot.
“No. I pout and stomp when I am frustrated by not getting my way. Is it effective?” She batted those long eyelashes, and he couldn’t help but laugh.
“What am I going to do to you?”
“I don’t know, you tell me.”
He shifted in his seat, his erection noticeable and hard.
“Slow down, lover.” Her hand on his thigh almost made him burst through his jeans.
“Mulberry.”
“What? You never know when someone’s watching.”
“It’s a bad idea.”
“Because this is a job to you, I know.”
The removal of her hand should have cooled him off, but the space on his thigh burned.
Nick drove the rest of the way in silence, all the while thinking of how she’d look naked.
Thankfully, Mulberry accepted Emma’s invitation to go out for a girls’ night, and Stone Security would follow her.
Erik had texted him, saying he hadn’t found anything and had left ten minutes before they got home.
Nick holed himself up in his tech room, the machines and the cool light comforting him.
Opening his laptop, he got lost in code. He could fix tangible things and ignore his tumultuous emotions.
He didn’t know how long it was, but it was dark when he emerged and saw Mulberry’s purse on the counter and her sweater on the couch.
He got himself a snack and heard her strangled cry.
Leaving his dish behind, he stepped into the bedroom.
“Hey, Mulberry, I got you.”
He turned the lights to a gentle yellow wash, and his heart tightened seeing her sitting in the middle of the bed, rocking.
“You’re okay.”
“I don’t feel like it. I had fun at dinner with Emma, then I came in and read and fell asleep,”
She choked back a sob. “Another nightmare.”
“You’re going to be all right.”
She shook her head, pushing his touch away.
