Four hours later, it was a wrap on set.

“So, was I totally awful?” Emma asked Mulberry.

“No! You were fantastic. You don’t like to hear it, but your dad is right. You’re a talented actor.”

Emma flipped her hair over her shoulder. “I just want more.”

“I get it. I’ve never been interested in acting.”

“I don’t know why. You like the attention.”

“Emma!”

Her friend grinned. “What, it’s true. And it’s not a bad thing, Mulberry. You like it less now, but when we were kids, you’d do stuff to get attention.”

Mulberry frowned, a stone formed in the pit of her stomach. She wasn’t sure she agreed with Emma and didn’t know what that said about her desires… those things that turned her on.

“It’s why you love a good prank, like when you took my Dad’s shoes.”

“Or we mixed up his carefully planned appointments,” Mulberry giggled. And then her heart hurt. Maybe the kidnapping wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been so needy.

“And I noticed you forgot to return the award you swiped.”

“Did not,” Mulberry stuck her tongue out.

Emma laughed.

But her stomach churned as she reached into her bag, handing back the globe-shaped award.

“Mulberry, what are you thinking?” Her friend’s psychologist-in-training look was on her face.

“I’m working through stuff, you know? Sometimes it just comes back.”

“What happened to you wasn’t your fault. No matter how many chocolate bars you took from my Dad’s desk,” Emma squeezed her hand.

“I know, thanks, Em.”

“Excuse me, sir, you can’t be in here!”

Mulberry covered her mouth as she saw a security guard run after Nick.

“Oh no, did you not give your boyfriend clearance?”

“I didn’t think I had to,” Mulberry mumbled.

Nick stopped, turned and marched up to the security guard, his brows furrowed. After a moment, the security guard put his hands up and nodded.

“Hey, Nick,” Emma waved.

Nick nodded at her, but his chilly stare was focused on her, and he took her elbow.

“You didn’t check your phone for the last hour.”

“So?” Mulberry shook him off. “You knew where I was.”

“That’s not the point,” he huffed out.

“I’m safe and fine, and I thought that was the point.”
