“Mulberry! Is it true Sheldon Peirce is making a documentary of your kidnapping?”
“Are you Sheldon Peirce’s daughter?”
Mulberry kept her head down as the questions were shouted at her. Finn and Janette made their way through the media scrum, flanking Nick and Mulberry on either side.
“Hold on to me,” Nick said.
She gripped him so hard he was sure he’d have bruises.
“Clear the way! Move folks! Thank you” Finn’s big frame helped to clear space, and the media moved enough so that Finn could get Mulberry safely down the steps.
“Are you ashamed to be Sheldon’s daughter?”
Mulberry’s head whipped back as if someone had slapped her.
“Keep going. Ignore them,” Nick said.
Finn and Janette led them to their SUV. Nick ushered Mulberry in the back, then slid next to her..He wanted to put an arm on her, to comfort her.
But he resisted.
“What is with those questions?” Nick asked.
“It’s all over social media,” Janette said. “This story about Mulberry being Sheldon’s daughter.”
Mulberry put her head down between her hands. Nick rubbed her back.
“Are you okay?”
“This is unreal. Emma is the spitting image of her Dad,” Mulberry said. And then she laughed, the sound high pitch and lovely.
“Okay, it is a little funny,” Nick admitted.
“You don’t strike me as a Vegas guy.”
Nick couldn’t help grinning at her. “No, my Mamie would have a heart attack.”
Mulberry patted his knee, their eyes met, and they both laughed. Damn, Nick hadn’t laughed like that…in forever.
“I’m dropping you by your car, Nick,” Finn said.
His friend’s eyes twinkled in the mirror.
“Great,” Nick said.
They circled the block once more, making sure no media were following them, then Finn stopped behind Nick’s red sports car.
“And no further sighting of that guy,” Janette said.
“Keep us posted,” Nick said.
“Thank you,” Mulberry said, waving at Finn and Janette.
Without conscious thought, Nick took her hand in his. “Want to get out of here?”
“Yes,” Mulberry said.
He wanted to kiss her senselessly; instead, he opened the passenger door for her and made sure she was buckled before sliding into the driver’s seat.
