“Mulberry, you didn’t tell us Nick would be here!” Emma draped an arm around him from behind. “Have a drink” Emma held out a cocktail glass of something pink.

“No thanks.” He could smell the alcohol fumes from Emma. How much had Mulberry had to drink?

A crowd was watching Mulberry dance. He felt eyes on him and Emma.

“I’m here to get my girl. Come on, Mulberry.”

“She’s having fun! What are you going to do, ruin her night?” Emma’s eyes flashed angrily. A tall brown-skinned woman came over, smiled at Nick and draped her arm around Emma.

“Emma, honey, let’s go to the bathroom. Night Mulberry.”

“Night, Liz,” Mulberry said.

“You want to dance?” Mulberry placed her palms on her hips, sliding up and down that moulded dress.

“No. Time to go.”

“Are you going to make me?” She leaned forward, giving him a good look at her black lacy bra.

“You come with me now, or I will throw you over my shoulder.”

Her face paled. She licked her lips.

“Okay, okay, be a downer. Girls, it’s been fun.”

“No! Come on, Mulberry!” Two other girls from opposite tables called.

“Next time!” Giggling, she jumped. Nick caught her in his arms, breathed in her light flowery scent and murmured only loud enough for her to hear, “How much have you had to drink?”

He caught the disappointment in her eyes as he set her down gently on her shiny black heels.

“None. A girl just can’t have fun, apparently.”

He slung an arm around her waist and walked her out to cries of, “We love you, Nickberry!” He sighed in the cool night air.

“NickBerry?”

“Yeah,” Mulberry grinned at him.

“Awful,” he grabbed her hand and led her to the car.

“I’m not a baby! You don’t have to buckle me in.”

“Oh woman, I know there is nothing innocent about you. Why did you lie to me? For all these weeks, I have come with you where ever you wanted to go.”

He slammed the door, got in the driver’s side and glared at her.

“I wanted a break, okay? Lush is a private nightclub, there’s never any press there, and I just wanted to let loose with friends.

“Mulberry, you don’t know who is out to get you. It might not be obvious, but you must know there is always media at Lush.”

She was silent for long moments as he drove home, the air thick between them.

“Maybe no one is out to get me. What’s it to you, anyway? You have no idea what it’s like.”

“Get out of the car.”

She huffed, slammed the door, marching ahead.
