“Not necessarily,” he replied. “My maternal grandfather had blue eyes and my maternal grandmother had brown ones, and my mother had green eyes!”

“Wow.”

His big hand smoothed against her cheek and rested there. “I’ve never seen skin like yours,” he remarked slowly. “Not a blemish anywhere.”

“I get that from my grandmother,” she said, smiling sadly. “She had beautiful skin.”

His thumb smoothed over her soft mouth, making it tremble. “No lipstick, either, and you don’t need it.”

She felt trembly inside. It was getting hard to breathe. He was very tall. She looked up at him with conflicting emotions.

His head bent while his thumb made soft patterns on her mouth, kindling hungers she hadn’t felt before.

“We should...we should really...go...inside,” she faltered.

“We probably should,” he replied huskily, as his mouth lowered to hers and slowly, very slowly, teased her lips apart.

She went stiff and one hand on his coat sleeve contracted suddenly. But she didn’t move away. It had been years since she’d been kissed, and she hadn’t liked it. This was different. Very different...

He smiled. “You taste like coffee and chocolate cookies,” he whispered. “Delicious...”

While she was registering the comment, his mouth opened just a little and moved down onto her lips. She could feel the sudden change in his breathing as his mouth grew slowly more insistent.

The hunger he was feeling transferred itself to her. She caught her breath and stood very still, going on tiptoe to keep him from lifting his face away.

Both big hands went to her waist and he lifted her up just a little. “We’re both out of practice,” he said huskily.

“Yes...”

“I have a really good solution to that.”

“You do?”

“We can practice on each other...”

He kissed her again. She let go of his coat sleeve and wrapped her arms around his neck and held on for dear life.

It was a long, slow, sweet kiss that went on and on until suddenly a small voice called out the back door, “Where are you guys? Hannah’s got coffee!”

They jerked apart, both a little uneasy.

“Just coming, sweetheart!” Abby called, her voice a little too high-pitched.

Cody took her hand in his and drew in a deep breath. “Yup,” he remarked as he led her through the barn door. “We’re going to need a lot of practice!”

CHAPTER SEVEN

ABBYHADBOUGHTa Monopoly set some days ago so that she and Lucy would have a way to entertain themselves. Lucy watched cartoons on Saturday morning, but neither of them liked to just sit and watch TV.

So Abby got out the game and set it on the table after Hannah had cleared away the dishes and washed them.

“Come on, Hannah, we can’t play with just three people,” Abby called.

“I’m not good at board games,” the older woman muttered.

“That’s wonderful! I have a better chance of winning,” Abby said, grinning.

“I love Monopoly. Me and Aunt Abby used to play it at night when we lived in the city!” Lucy trilled.
