“Because he wanted me,” I said, swallowing hard. “And I didn’t want him.”

Inferna groaned. “For fuck’s sake. Someone teach monsters that rejection is okay.”

Art and Calen both snorted.

“I will handle it,” I said, standing up from my chair.

Inferna stood too, meeting me eye to eye. “Not alone,” she said firmly. “Promise me you will do what I just said.”

“I’m the—”

“Don’t you fucking say it,” she said.

I glared at her for a moment, but then I couldn’t help but smile. She was a force to be reckoned with and I respected the hell out of her.

“You’re very direct sometimes,” I said.

“And you’re very stupid sometimes. Do not put Anne or Sylvia in jeopardy because you can’t listen to directions, Alex. I like them both.”

“I like them both too,” I said, walking around the chair to the door. I paused, holding the handle. “I’m going home. If you need me, call.”

“I will,” Inferna said, crossing her arms. “If anything happens, please let us know.”

“I will,” I promised.

And that was one I would keep.

I was tired of fighting alone. It didn’t help anything.

“We’ve taken him down once,” Art said, looking around the room. “We can do it again.”

It was true, but now that he had crawled out of hell, he would be ten times harder to deal with.

I nodded and then opened the door, sliding out into the main office. I saw Anne at her desk, Sylvia leaning against it. Both of their heads turned, gazes holding mine.

I went to them, pressing my lips together. “Come home with me,” I said. “Please.”

They both nodded, and the three of us headed to the elevators.

ANNE

I already wanted more.I was already desperate to touch him again, to feel Sylvia writhing beneath me. We made it to Alex's house within a few minutes, and I wasn't surprised that it was so close by.

Alex opened the front door and I groaned as I stepped in, immediately surrounded by the scent of him. Sylvia let out a breath, looking around.

“It’s… It’s kind of a mess,” he muttered, his cheeks turning red.

It was a mess, but mostly because it was obvious he really had been going crazy yesterday. There were blankets on his couch, on the floor, mounds of pillows. There was the tinge of magic in the air, an almost electrical feel to it.

His house was cozier than I had expected, which was a nice surprise.

“You live alone?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Alex said, giving me a thoughtful smile. He hung his jacket on a coat rack next to the doorway, slipping off his shoes.
