“I’m sorry,” Inferna said. “The good news is, uncle Lucy is family so he immediately told us about it. He told the Barista, and the Barista called my dad. And my dad called me. Yesterday, I got the phone call while at home.”

“Fuck,” I whispered, leaning back in my seat. “Fuck. This is bad.”

“It is,” she said, grimacing. “If it’s any consolation, I think Lucy hasn’t been flogged now for a few weeks.”

“Isn’t that….isn’t that a good thing?”

“No,” she snickered.

I raised a brow but didn’t say anything, still reeling from the news.

I had believed it was over.

I had been living the last few weeks finally free of the monster who had been determined to ruin my life. Who had been determined to hurt so many witches and monsters alike.

My gut twisted as I thought about him coming back.

I was in heat now.

It was only a matter of time. And now that I was in heat because of Anne and Sylvia…

“They’re in danger,” I whispered.

“Who?” Art asked.

“Anne and Sylvia.”

Art and Calen cocked their heads while Inferna only raised a brow.

“Is that who I smelled in your office?”

I waved my hand, refusing to answer that. “I am in heat right now.”

“Right,” Art said, “Which brings up the next thing. Why are you here at work? You’ve spent the last few months being so adamant that any omega witch in heat takes time off, but here you are. You’re being an idiot.”

“Candid,” I muttered. “But true. I had to see Anne.”

“Ah,” Inferna said. “Hmmm…. I like Anne a lot. And Sylvia has been hurt from Alfred too.”

“We all have,” Calen whispered.

I looked over at him, giving a small nod. “I’m sorry. Most of this is my fault. But, I thought it was over.”

“We thought it was too,” Inferna said. “It’s unfortunate he had a favor to call on.”

“It’s fortunate that we had a heads up,” Art said.

It was. Now, I knew I had to be infinitely more careful. I had to figure out how to protect Anne and Sylvia without completely succumbing to my heat.

Which was damn near impossible.

Even the thought of them right now, even with the terrible news looming over our heads, sent a pang of need through me.

“Go home,” Inferna said. “You’re a strong witch. Put up spells. I’m sure all of our witches would be willing to reinforce them too. Spend a couple days with Anne and Sylvia, fuck a lot, break your heat, and then we will track down Alfred. I’m sure he’s not far, but I think we still have a little bit of time.”

Did we? Did we have any time? How did I know he wasn’t already waiting for me?

“Why does he hate you so much?” Inferna asked.
