"He's the brother of Saint Frederic University's Chancellor, Gabriel Martin." That comes as a shock, but it doesn't quite scratch the itch of recognition. "This is shocking to say the least. Laurent never gets his hands dirty like this."

I'm not shocked.

I always knew the Chancellor was as sleazy as they come. One doesn't preside over a school of criminals and retain a squeaky-clean track record. My only question is why would a member of his family want to hurt Alize?

Wait.

"He knows her," I say, the memory finally coming back to me. "She calls him Uncle Laurent. He's the one who sent her to SFU."

"What?" This seems like news to Lev. "I'll admit that I don't know as much about Laurent as I do his brother. They are heirs to the same fortune, though Laurent prefers to stay out of the spotlight."

"I really don't care about his background," I snap. "Is that all you have? His name?"

My words come out more forceful than I intend. In this situation, Lev is my superior, even though we've worked together before. Surprisingly, he doesn't pull rank. "Yes. I will let you know if I find anything else."

"Alright. Th—"

"Alexander? Time is of the essence."

The nerve of this man. "She's more important to me than she will ever be to you, Lev. Of course, I fucking know that."

I kick him off the call. Fucking hell.

The line is still open, but there's radio silence on the other end.

I loosen my bowtie and slip it from around my neck. I undo a few buttons, then remove my cufflinks. It's been five hours so far since Alize has been taken. I'm a little closer to finding her, but there's still sleuthing to be done.

I won't be sleeping until I find her.

"I started combing through his records as soon as he gave us the name," Vance says. I can hear the clicking of keys. "Any ideas where to start?"

"She’s more than likely concussed from the fall," Ezra says. I wince, feeling phantom pain at the side of my head. "He wouldn't risk flying with her."

"So they're still in the country."

"He wouldn't risk taking her to a location that he doesn't have complete control over," I say. "He knows that Alize is a high-value hostage."

I have so many questions.

"He's her uncle, you said?" Ezra says.

Swiping my thumb over my lips, I frown. "Not blood. More like a family friend, I suppose. He was her guardian after the attack on her family's estate."

"But he fucking kidnaps her in a foreign country?"

"I am just as confused as you are, Ezra," I say. "It makes no sense."

This new information makes me a lot more nervous.

Whenever personal feelings are involved, things start to get messy.

I was hoping this was related to her father, or even me, somehow. At least then I could be sure that whoever took her would want her alive. But this–this throws a wrench into things.

This could just be his act of revenge.

"If I had to guess, I would say he's holding her at a property he owns." Vance rejoins the conversation. "I'm checking out the property records now."

I hold my breath.
