“They loved them,” she told him smiling, “and we’re going to start checking on places to hold them tomorrow.”

“That’s amazing baby,” he said catching her up in a twirl. He led her inside to a candle lit table and sat her down.

“What’s this?” she asked.

“Dinner,” he deadpanned.

“I know that but why?”

“To show how much I’ve enjoyed the last almost two weeks with you and because I know how tired you must be. You’ve been working so hard on both the ideas for the fundraisers but also with everything else. I never realized exactly how much work PR was.”

“Well thank you,” she smiled the tiredness disappearing replaced by the hunger that was becoming more and more constant in her life. She was so happy but yet she was dreading Emma and Miles coming home because she knew things would change the moment they did.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked.

“Emma and Miles,” she admitted.

“What about them?”

“What their reactions are going to be to us.”

“Us?” Jake said catching her use of it.

“Yes us, I may not be ready for everyone to know but Emma’s going to sense something’s up the moment she sees me.”

“What are you going to tell her then?”

“I’m not sure,” she said. “I don’t know what they’re going to think.”

“I can tell you this, Miles has wanted me to meet Emma’s friend Stacey for years,” Jake admitted. “I’ve always refused because of you; I never imagined that Emma’s Stacey would be my Cee.”

“Jake,” she sighed. “I’m not ready to tell them the truth. I need some time.”

“How much time?” he asked a bit annoyed. “It’s been nearly two weeks; I’m not going anywhere.”

“For now, but you’re going to be heading back in the next few months and then what? I’ve got a great life here, good friends, and I love my job.”

“And there’s no way you’d think about moving east is there?” he asked sensing she wouldn’t change anything for them.

“No, there’s not. I already tried the rearranging my life for yours and it didn’t work Jake. Besides, you’ll be glad to be back there and away from me,” she said laughing.

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” he whispered, “but for now I’ll agree to keep the past in the past.”

“Thank you,” she told him with a kiss that went on and on.

Chapter 4

“Stacey!” Emma cried late Saturday afternoon coming up the walk to her house. She and Jake had decided to make dinner for Emma and Miles to ease them into their relationship.

“It’s so good to see you,” Stacey said hugging her. She was nervous, both about Emma and Miles’ reaction but also because it was the first time, she’d let Jake in her home. She bought it two years ago for next to nothing, as it needed repairs badly. The previous owners had neglected it, but she’d fallen in love with the location and took a chance on it. It was small, two bedrooms, two and a half baths, and two levels with an unfinished basement. She’d taken her time and had made it the home of her dreams.

“I take it you and Jake worked out whatever tension was there?” Emma grinned at the sight of Jake on her patio.

“We did,” she said.

“Well then, what was up at the wedding?”

“Nothing,” Stacey shrugged.
