“Stay with him until it’s time for him to go; hope that maybe we can have an ending this time so I can have a real beginning with someone else,” she said, and Emma hugged her tightly.

“If he’s dumb enough to leave you again then I will kick his sorry ass and I will make sure Miles does too.”

“For now, can we keep this between us? I don’t want Miles to know because Jake’s said something to him, and I don’t know what.”

“Promise, I mean it Stace. I love you girl.”

“I love you too Em,” she said as she put the things back with a last look at the ring, she’d grown to hate but still firmly loved.

“Okay man truth time,” Miles said as they finished their run and headed up the sidewalk towards Stacey’s house. “What is going on with you and Stacey? I know you’re practically living with her and for her that’s huge, I mean it man. She doesn’t let anyone in.”

“Like you?” he countered. “Why didn’t you tell me that you’d asked her out and she set you up with Emma instead?”

“I didn’t think it’d matter. It took me all of ten minutes to fall for Emma and that was it. Stacey became a friend, and I don’t want her hurt.”

“You don’t or Emma doesn’t?”

“Both of us, you play fast and loose, I know that chick from college did a number on you but Stacey…”

“Is my Cee,” he said cutting him off and he took out his phone. “She’s always been my Cee.”

“Holy shit…but I thought…oh damn,” Miles laughed handing the phone back to him. “All this time I wanted you to meet Stacey…”

“I couldn’t because all I wanted was Cee, my Cee. She stepped out from behind Emma at the church and I thought I was having a heart attack. Then she pretended she didn’t know me, no one realized that she was mine…”

“Awfully possessive of the girl who crushed you and I can’t believe Stacey was the one who gave you that ultimatum, that’s not Stacey.”

“I realized that about three days too late,” he admitted. “I went to the church saw her and couldn’t do it. I couldn’t marry her while she wanted me to choose because I figured she wouldn’t ever want this life. My parents reamed me for not showing, for breaking Cee’s heart when the entire time mine was crushed because there was only one person, I wanted with me as I went to the NFL. She was it for me and that’s when I finally got it, she didn’t want to stop me from playing football.”

“She didn’t?” Miles asked.

“No, she wanted me to prove that she meant more than it did. Yeah, at your wedding I was an ass because she messed with my head and made me question all of that, but I saw how stupid I’d been back then just three days too late. When I went after her, she wasn’t there, no one knew where she’d gone, and I couldn’t find her. So, I went to camp and barely played that first year, spent all my spare time in the gym and then I got my shot.”

“While proceeding to screw anything in a skirt?”

“Yeah, that’s about as true as Cee not knowing me at the wedding.”

“Meaning what?”

“Meaning and I swear to god I will kill you if you so much as utter a single word of this to anyone including your wife.”

“Alright,” Miles said holding up his hands.

“Until I found Cee at your wedding…let’s just say that the reports were all fictional. There hasn’t been any mass quantity of women in my bed. Hell, there hasn’t been a single one in my bed until Cee.”

“Hold on, you are not seriously saying that you haven’t had sex in eight years.”

“Have I flirted yeah, have I fooled around yeah, but none of them could interest me enough to go for it. Most of my teammates think I’m gay,” he admitted with a laugh. “If they could only see me now…”

“So, what are you planning to do?” Miles managed to ask after his laughter subsided.

“Convince Cee to make this real, get her to the altar in a wedding dress and put my ring on her finger finally, that’s the only one I want anymore.”

“Football?”

“I still want to play but I asked my agent to look into getting me traded out here. He thinks I’m nuts, but I don’t care. I lost Cee once there’s no way in hell, I’m losing her again.”
