Besides there’d have to be someone other than Jake for it to matter, she mused. Then again seeing him beat himself up would be quite entertaining.

“Always sneaky, dating a baseball star under our noses, previously engaged to the star of the NFL—what else don’t we know Stacey?” Emma prodded.

“How to zip it?” she teased. “Let’s drop this as Miles suggested.”

“For now, Cee,” Jake agreed determined to find out who he was so he could make sure he didn’t steal her away again.

Chapter 6

“Stacey…they’re here,” Lizzie said poking her head into the room.

She glanced back at her friend and smiled as the group she was with began to spread out. She looked at Jake and lifted a brow and he gave in as he went out to meet the others.

He was surprised when he hit the main ballroom and saw every single one of the unmarried guys from the team there. “Okay, what’s this?”

“Well, we figured if someone’s going to pay for a date they might as well pay for someone who’s likely to take them home,” Dan stated greeting him.

“Seriously,” he said giving them all pointed looks.

“Hey, we’re not the ones who gave up smokin’ hot chicks to come to this drizzly place for over three entire months to help promote this fundraiser.”

“So, we decided to see what was keeping you here,” Moses added glancing at the group that had come in. “Man, now that chick’s hot,” he said nodding at Lizzie.

“Behave or you’re likely to find yourself stuck very uncomfortably with needles,” he said looking for Stacey. “You’re all willing to be auctioned off and match the donations?”

“We’ve agreed to it,” Frasier stated.

“Then we’re going to have to get the new auction list set up,” he told them. “Lizzie, can you get these guys all sheets?”

“All?” she asked looking over the group.

“Yeah, where’s Stacey?”

“Working on the lineup but it looks like that’ll have to be changed. She said she’d be out to make sure everyone was still in agreement.”

“Thanks,” he stated as the door opened again and most of the players from Seattle walked in. “Are you all…”

“Yup, your boys posted tweets about being here…we’re not about to let you all show us up in our town,” Gary replied. “Where’s Stacey, I’m trying to see if she’ll bid on me or if I should call my latest paramour.”

“Keep dreaming Gary,” Lizzie said handing out the sheets for them all to fill out. “We’ve got to get the website adjusted so people know to come for a large showing.”

“I’ll call Asher and the TV station,” Jake told her before getting an idea. “You all feel like upping this a bit?” he asked the guys looking between the two groups.

“What’d you have in mind?” Leroy asked.

“Between all of us there’s bound to be most of the city following so it’s going to be New England versus Seattle,” he suggested as Stacey walked over behind the group and looked on in confusion.

“Whichever team brings in the most money wins?” Charlie asked. “Alright, but what do we get other than bragging rights?”

“The largest sponsor plaque on the wall when it’s built,” John suggested as Mark agreed.

“I’m sure the board will say yes,” he stated.

“I don’t know,” Gary said with a look towards Jake. “I think the winning team should also have the pleasure of taking Stacey out for a night.”

Jake felt his anger rise. He was tired of pretending he wasn’t with her. It’d been four months and he wanted her to admit that she still loved him, that she was his because he was ready to propose but this time, he was likely to drag her to a twenty-four hour chapel and put a ring on her finger instantly.

“Uh oh,” Lizzie muttered as Mark looked between Gary and Jake.
