“I know. Look at you…you are gorgeous girl.”

“More so than eight to ten years ago even,” Jake agreed. “You all don’t mind if we join you right?”

“I think we can handle it don’t you all?” Toni asked hugging Stacey again.

“Absolutely,” the others affirmed, and the rest of the evening flew by in a whirl of fun.

“Cee it’s just church,” Jake stated shooting her a look.

“I know it’s just church but the last time I was in that church…”

“I know I hurt you baby, but I promise I won’t ever again. Don’t give me that look Cee. I would gladly fly to Vegas right now and marry you. I love you even if you can’t say it back yet,” he said pulling her into his hold further. “You are everything to me; just tell me what I need to do to prove that.”

“I don’t know Jake, just be with me I guess,” she told him as her heart fluttered out of control hearing him offer to fly to Vegas. It shouldn’t but it did, and she realized how much she wanted it. Again, she shouldn’t but she did and now it was going to be stuck in her head for the next hour while they sat in the church where they were supposed to be married.

The instant they walked through the doors together heads turned, and she felt like running, something she hadn’t felt in years at least not to this extent. Jake’s arm slipped around her waist and suddenly things weren’t as bad. The surprised looks increased and she saw several whisper amongst themselves but for the most part, it didn’t bother her.

“If it isn’t little Stacey Martin,” Zoe drawled heading towards them. “Isn’t this just so cozy? It makes us all feel like we’re back in high school.”

“Back off Zoe,” Jake warned, and she saw something new between the two of them. This wasn’t just because of Jake dumping her in high school. A sickening feeling washed over her and her giddiness at the idea of flying to Vegas with him slipped away.

“Oh, come on Jake, shouldn’t your girlfriend know about what happened during the intermittent years?”

“Jake,” Stacey said glancing around as the crowd grew even more attentive. “Let’s just sit down; this isn’t the place for this.”

“I think everyone’s interested,” Zoe countered blocking their way. “He dumps you here, goes on to sleep with anything with a pulse and yet here you are. What’s wrong Stacey, can’t get any other men to buy into your pathetic woe-is-me mess?”

“You don’t know the first thing about me Zoe because you never bothered to look so back off and get out of my face,” she stated taking a step forward.

“You are so pathetic. He snaps his fingers, and you go running back to him,” she laughed. “How long before he tosses you aside? Hmm? You run away because he broke your heart but now, he’s back and it’s fixed so you race back here.”

“You’re so wrong.”

“Wrong? Come on Stacey, everyone knows what happened eight years ago right here in this church. He dumped you because all he wanted was a little action which you were always more than willing to provide weren’t you?”

“Enough!” Jake shouted at Zoe. “Say another word about Stacey and you will regret it, Zoe.”

“What the hell is it with her? You dump me for her, you then dump her and come to me, and then you can’t even bother to arise for the occasion,” Zoe scoffed making her smile slightly.

“Why would he want you when he was always thinking of me?” she asked moving back into his arms. “He’s been mine from the day he asked me out. You’re just upset because you couldn’t tempt him into sleeping with you, but you’re wrong about something. Jake didn’t dump me.”

“What do you call leaving you high and dry on your wedding day?”

“His answer,” she shrugged.

“About ending your ridiculous relationship…”

“I was ready to marry Cee,” Jake argued.

“Then why didn’t you?” Toni inquired coming up beside them.

“Because I pushed him away,” Stacey admitted. “Same as now, right Jake?”

“Hold on what?” Toni said staring at her. “Sorry girl it may have been eight year ago, but I know you, Stacey. You were heartbroken that he didn’t show.”

“I was, because football meant more to him back then.”
