“Cee, baby, come here,” Jake said pulling her across his lap as they sat down underneath their tree. She turned and wrapped her legs around his waist as her arms did the same to his neck while she buried her head into his shoulder letting the tears come. “Ah baby don’t cry. You know I hate it when you cry Cee.”

“Sorry, I just can’t stop,” she admitted wishing she could.

“I know this is hard baby, but we’ll get through it. They’ll catch them and they’ll be out of your life for good.”

“I hope so Jake,” she said lifting her face to him. “I can’t even begin to think what they could do.”

“I won’t let them get near you again,” he stated running a hand down the back of her head. “We can go somewhere they can’t find you, somewhere you’ll be safe.”

“Bryant recommended not being in town, but you have to get to camp soon.”

“And I’ll make sure you’re safe while I’m there,” he said an idea coming to mind. “We’ll head up to my place Tuesday. I need to get things ready to ship out to Seattle and there’s a ton of security there. I’m also going to hire someone to watch you.”

“What? No Jake.”

“No arguments Cee. I am not going to lose you now.”

“Jake,” she sighed but the look in his eyes made her stop. “I don’t need a bodyguard. I’ll come with you to your place because being down here for too long will send me to the loony bin but no bodyguard.”

“Baby these guys have stalked you, left things in your house, held a knife to your throat, and left bombs to kill you, they’re not going to stop until they’ve gotten what they want and that’s to hurt you. I can’t let that happen.”

“Jake, I don’t want someone following me around all the time. For all I know they could be out of the country. They’re not completely stupid. They know if they’re caught, they’re going to go to jail for a long, long time.”

“And if they don’t care this time? If they’re willing to be killed or let whatever happens to them happen, then what?”

“I don’t know Jake, but I can’t do my job with someone trailing after me all the time. My clients won’t appreciate it, and neither will I.”

“Yeah, well that’s too damned bad because if they want you alive then they’re going to have to deal with it. I love you, Cee. I don’t care that you refuse to admit that you love me too but I’m not going to sit around and wonder if you’re safe. You either accept that I’m going to have someone to drive you where you need to go, stay with you when I’m not there, or else I’m going to flake out of my contract and do it myself.”

“You’re such a male do you know that?” she groaned trying to stop the desire to kiss him and smack him at the same time.

“I know but I’ve always been this way, Cee. You know I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“Yeah, then why did you let all of those women hang all over you when we were together?” she asked, unable to stop from going there now.

“What are you talking about baby?” he asked seriously.

“At school, I’d be sitting at the table with you, and they’d come up and sit next to you. They’d let their arms drape over yours, their hands rest on your legs, or some of them went as far as wrapping their arms around your neck and you never once said anything to them, you let them do it right in front of me Jake and it hurt like hell.”

“Ah Cee, baby I’m sorry. I didn’t realize.”

“You never do.”

“Cee, from the second you said yes to me for our first date it’s only been you. No one else has mattered to me, what they did wasn’t important. I wanted you and only you.”

“That’s not how it felt to me Jake. I’d see you with them and the ones who’d come up and kiss you…”

“Cee, I never cheated on you.”

“It was only a matter of time though.”

“So that’s why you pushed me away the way you did? Fuck Cee, I askedyouto marry me baby. I wanted to be with you forever. I still do, just you…onlyyou.”

“That’s not how you made me feel back then, it was as though it were expected and that’s why you did it. You were so wrapped up in football that I was an afterthought.”

“I realize that now and I will never make you feel that way again I swear Cee, but you have to give me the chance to show you that.”

“I am and you’ve gotten me so far off the original subject it’s not funny Jake.”
