“You’re not thinking about them now though, are you?”

“Not really, so thank you for getting me mad at you to avoid worrying about what they’re plotting.”

“You’re welcome baby,” he teased kissing her gently as they got up to go.

“Stop Jake or else you’re going to make us late for lunch and your mom will know exactly why.”

“Maybe she’ll think we’re making her a grandbaby and be okay with it,” he offered, and she pulled back slightly.

“What?”

“Oh, come on Cee, my mother has gone from wanting to smack me and my reputation to Siberia and back to wondering how long until she can start buying baby booties.”

“That’s not going to happen, Jake.”

“Well, I’d rather we wait until after we’re married to have a baby because I’m selfish and want you to myself for a few more years but I want to have a real life with you Cee and that includes kids.”

“Yeah, well, it’s not going to happen now for sure, maybe not ever.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked stopping her beside the car.

“It means that I’ve changed my mind. I don’t want them.”

“Why?”

“I’m selfish and I like my life just the way it is, no one relying on me, no one I have to be responsible for,” she said with a shrug.

“That’s a lie Cee. You’ve got a million people relying on you.”

“Professionally but not personally.”

“What about Emma? The two of you are thick as can be.”

“But her happiness, life doesn’t depend on me.”

“I swear you’re more confusing than any woman I’ve ever known Cee.”

“You’ve certainly known plenty of them,” she quipped to hide her desire to have his child. Until he’d mentioned it, she hadn’t given it any thought. She’d been on the pill for years to keep her cycle on track, even before they’d gotten together, she’d been taking them but now she was wondering what would have happened if she hadn’t been on them.

“Why are you trying to pick a fight Cee?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Jake, let’s just go. We can discuss our plans for the rest of the week later.”

“Fine, you’re off the hook again but you won’t stay off it for long baby. We’re going to have this out once and for all.”

“I look forward to it,” she lied settling back into the seat as they drove off.

The instant they got to the house Leo and Rebecca pounced on them with a mile long list of questions regarding the past and present.

“The two of you are hiding something,” Leo said looking between them as lunch ended.

“No, we’re not, Dad,” Jake countered rubbing her shoulder lightly.

“Yes, we are,” she admitted as they continued to stare at them. “It’s to do with the way Jake’s been acting today.”

“Are you sure you want to tell them?” he asked staring into her eyes. “They’re going to go nuts.”

“Aren’t we?” she queried looking pointedly at him. “I got a phone call this morning from a friend at the police department. I have restraining orders against three people who wouldn’t take no for an answer about going out with them.”
