“Could be interesting then,” she laughed laying her head back down against his shoulder.

“It will be,” he agreed walking away as the others watched.

“I’d say he’s gonna get at least one of those rings,” Gary said looking at the team.

“If not then he’s done more stupid shit than we know,” Charlie added.

Jake ignored the comments his mind too wrapped around the fact that he’d nearly just lost her again. They reached the parking lot, and he spotted Rice there with the SUV. He slipped into the back seat with her and held her as Rice drove to her house.

“It’s clean now, we’ve had it completely checked over,” he said as they went inside. “Anything you need me to do?”

“Keep an eye out for vultures, I don’t want reporters getting near her,” Jake told him before carrying her upstairs so he could prove to himself that she was there and safe.

“Jake I’m not going to break,” she sighed pulling back slightly when he sat down on the bed. “Yes, I was scared—terrified, the thought of losing you…it’s too much to imagine and that it could have happened because of me…”

“It wasn’t because of you Cee. It was them. They were the ones with problems and now they’re gone. They took aim at us, and dozens of SWAT members and they’re gone. That was all on them.”

She nodded knowing deep down it was right but, on the surface, she was still worried. “Jake…”

“I’m not going anywhere, baby. Not now, not tomorrow, next week, next month, year…I am here with you one hundred percent. I love you. I’ve always loved you. I said it in my letter to you the day I didn’t show up.”

“I still haven’t read it, I couldn’t.”

“Baby, read it,” he said staring down into her eyes. “Please read it.”

“I thought you wanted me to stay in your arms all day.”

“I do but I need you to read it Cee. I need you to know that I have never stopped loving you and that I never will.”

“Jake, I don’t need to read it to know that now,” she said bringing his gaze back to hers and holding it. “I know it. I know you. I love you.”

“You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear you say that, Cee. When I first saw you at the wedding, I thought I was seeing a ghost. Then I found out that you ran through guys, and I wanted to know why. That wasn’t you, baby. I showed up at your door because I couldn’t stop myself. I needed to know why you’d become this person, if I’d done it to you and I had.”

“It wasn’t just you.”

“But I should have shown up and at least told you in person what I put in that letter; if I had maybe none of this would have happened. We’d still be together; we’d have a baby…”

“But we wouldn’t have Emma and Miles,” she said with a light smile.

“No, we wouldn’t…then again maybe we would. All I know is I was determined to make you fall in love with me again that night. I was going to use sex to make you mine completely this time.”

“All it took was one kiss to make me yours again Jake.”

“You don’t know how much I love hearing you say that but it’s not true. You’re still holding onto that mystery man, the one who showed you how to let go in a way that I hadn’t, to enjoy everything about making love.”

“Jake there is no mystery man.”

“Yes, there is, and I want so badly not to know but there’s this tiny part of me that wonders if you’re going to run into him one day and want him more than me.”

“I won’t Jake I promise.”

“Prove it Cee, marry me,” he said staring into her eyes. “Will you marry me?”

“Jake,” she sighed as a smile crossed her face. “Yes, I will marry you.”

“Finally,” he groaned covering her lips with his as he kissed them both naked.

They spent the entire afternoon and evening in bed, not answering the phone when it rang, simply enjoying themselves. She woke around two a.m. unable to sleep despite being tired and slipped out of the bed watching Jake carefully for a few minutes to make sure he was still asleep. She walked to the closet and pulled out the Georgia box, taking the letter downstairs as she made some tea.
