She headed straight to the field and let out a strangled cry of pain seeing the scene below her. Jim stopped her and motioned for the others to head down to surround the three men.

“Drop the guns,” the SWAT leader commanded. “You’re surrounded and there’s no getting out.”

“You drop us, and that bomb goes kaboom,” Nathaniel laughed. “You’ve got to stop it before you can stop us and that’s not going to happen.”

“Like hell it won’t,” she muttered pushing past Jim and Galen to head to Jake.

“Cee get back,” he shouted at her.

“No, those POS are not going to take you from me,” she whispered reaching him. She knelt down in front of the chair he was tied to and studied the bomb in his lap. Her heart felt like it was going to rip in two and she prayed she could keep it all together until it was over.

“Baby, go,” he said desperately wanting to touch her one last time.

“No Jake, I’m not leaving you. I have not run all over this damned town today stopping these things to walk away now,” she stated as Jim and Galen reached them. She moved out of the way so they could get ready to diffuse the first portion of the protocol and she kissed Jake gently.

“Cee, baby,” he whispered trying to get his arms free.

Galen took the knife from the toolbox and cut the ropes warning him, “Stay still.”

He nodded and moved his arms around to cup her face and wipe away the single tear that slipped from the corner of her eye. “I love you baby, always.”

She rested her head against his, her cheek pressed alongside his and tried to stop the fear that was coursing through her.

“Jake, I love you too,” she said so quietly she didn’t know if he heard but the way his hands tightened around her shoulder, she knew he had. She pulled back kissing him again before taking a deep breath nodding to Galen and Jim that she was ready.

She kept one hand clasped together with Jake’s and counted the seconds in her head as they started. They finished and she watched the problem come up on the screen. The first few seconds clicked off and she had no clue.

“Cee, stop thinking,” Jake said squeezing her hand and she saw the problem again, the answer coming to her as she went back over all of her calculus training. She typed in the answer, hitting the accept key and it stopped counting down.

Jim, Galen and the others quickly transferred it from Jake’s lap, and he stood up lifting her into his arms as he moved her further away from the group. She buried her head in his shoulder wrapping herself around him as he held her tightly to him.

“No!” Nathaniel shouted and they both heard the gunshot.

Her hands tightened on Jake’s neck as two more rang out, but he didn’t move or fall.

“Shh baby, shh, it’s over. It’s all over angel,” he whispered against her hair soothing a hand down her back. “They can’t hurt you ever again.”

“How,” she whispered peeking up. She couldn’t see anything between the wall of officers and Jake. Her gaze locked on his and she felt everything crash in on her.

“They’re gone,” Galen said leading them both from the field. “Where’s everyone else?”

“Locked in the locker room,” he answered. “Can I take her home?”

“Absolutely,” Jim answered. “We can handle the rest from here.”

He nodded and started carrying her through the building to his car. They were almost to the doors when the rest of the team came around the corner towards them.

“Jake…Stacey!” Gary called out. “What the hell happened?”

“Long story, I’ll fill you in later or else Jim and Galen can,” Jake stated. “Right now, I’m taking Cee home.”

“Sure, she okay?”

“Physically yeah, but it’s been a hell of a day,” he answered holding her against him even more.

“I can walk Jake,” she said lifting her head to look at him.

“I don’t care. You’re not leaving my arms for the rest of the day,” he replied.
