And without warning, the knife slices into her skin. She arches off the bed in pain; her veins strained in an effort to deny him the pleasures of her torment.

But he doesn’t stop. He kept tearing away at her skin with slow and accurate precision, waiting for her to cry out his name in pain.

I double over in agony as her horrified scream tears through my head as I awake.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

Pocus

Iwatch as the black SUV rolls down the clubhouse’s driveway with a growing sense of premonition. Such expensive cars don’t usually come to this part of town. So it can only mean one thing…

“Make sure Abigail doesn’t leave her room,” I whisper to Hex, who was sitting beside me on one of the porch chairs. Hex nods wordlessly and heads inside. I stand up from my seat just as the car pulls to a stop a few feet away from the main building. I watch with a slight frown as the driver steps out of the car. I’m surprised to see a tall woman in a dark suit. She has a perfectly proportioned body and long blonde hair. She walks around to the car's passenger side and opens the door with a slight bow. Anderson Grey steps out of the car with an exaggerated grace. My stomach instantly knots up with fury. What does he think he’s doing here? I quickly descend the stairs to meet them halfway before he gets any closer to the house. I hear the sounds of heavy boots behind me, and I look back to Seer, and Bones are hot on my heels. Hex must have alerted them when I sent him in.

“Hello, mon ami,” Anderson greets in a loud voice. He holds his hands out to me like someone who’s truly welcoming an old-time friend, his mouth pulled up in a wry smile. “Such a grand welcome.”

“What the fuck do you want here?” I growl, stepping in his way to stop him from going any further.

Anderson chuckles like I just made a joke that pleases him. “It’s touching how you’re always concerned about my needs,” he says. “You always ask what I want.”

I pull my pistol from its holster on my waistband and aim at his skull. Seer and Bones do the same. “Now, I guess you’re asking for a bullet in the head,” I say with a sneer. “Get the fuck off my property, or I swear, I will pop you in the head.”

“Hey…Hey…,” Anderson drawls, raising his hands in mock surrender. “That’s no way to treat a visitor.” His mouth is pulled up in a slightly amused smirk despite that hard glint in his fathomless black eyes. “I haven’t even stated my business here?”

“Which brings me back to my question,” I say coldly. “What the fuck do you want on my property?”

“Evanesce,” he drawls slowly, his dark eyes boring purposefully into mine. “I want her here in New Orleans.”

My grip on the gun tightens, and everything in me suddenly freezes. “What the fuck did you say?” I ask in a cold voice that reveals nothing of the raging fury that’s starting in my chest.

“You heard me,” Anderson replies with equal frigidity.

I walk closer to him and place the barrel of my gun over the exact spot where his heart beats.

“You will not say my sister’s name with that filthy mouth of yours,” I say slowly, jabbing the gun against his chest with every word. “That’ll only make me go crazy. And I don’t know what I’ll do when I go crazy.”

Anderson leans forward until I can feel his breath tickling my ear. “Are you talking about your sickness, friend?” he asks in a conspiratorial whisper. “Intermittent explosive disorder. I wonder if your cronies here know about your mental illness. It’d be interesting to watch you give yourself away.”

I move away from him, staggering a little from the intensity of the shock that ripples through me.

How does this bastard know about my illness?

The psychiatrist…it can’t be.

I had Bones snap her neck long ago when she started to blackmail me. I grit down hard on my teeth in an effort to control the rage rippling through me.

“Evanesce is to be my wife,” Anderson says. His eyes harden, and his mouth pulls up in a slow mocking smirk. “I will do more than say her name. Oh, you don’t know the things I plan to do to her. I will….”

My fist connects with his jaw, effectively cutting off his annoying rant. His head snaps to the side with the force of my hit, and he staggers to the side. The blonde woman behind him gasps loudly; her dull blue eyes opening wide in surprise. She starts to rush toward him, but Anderson holds up a hand to stop her. She steps back with a respectful nod, her hands folded neatly behind her back. I’d almost forgotten her presence.

Who is she? A bodyguard? The new assistant?

Anderson raises his head slowly. His bloody lips slowly pulled up in a mirthless smile, despite the cold rage in his endless black eyes.

“That wasn’t a very nice move, mon ami,” Anderson says coldly, calmly pulling out a handkerchief from his pants pocket to wipe off the blood on his busted lips. He bunches the bloody napkin in his fist. The tautness of his fingers is the only indication of whatever emotions he’s feeling. “There’s only so much more I can take before my patience wears thin.”

He walks closer to me. He doesn’t flinch when I cock my gun and press it against his temple. Seer and Bones also follow suit, ready to dislodge bullets at the slightest indication.

“Y’all are cute,” Anderson says with an amused chuckle. “Do you think I don’t know that your sister agreed to my proposal to buy you and your little crew some time to try and take me down? Of course, I’m no man’s fool. But you see, Pocus…a promise to me may as well be an oath written in blood. Evanesce will be mine to do with as I please, and you can’t stop me. It doesn’t take much to destroy the little thing you have going on for you here. I can make it all disappear with a snap of my fingers.” His eyes harden. He moves even closer to me and jabs a finger over my heart, unflinching even when I hook my finger over the trigger of the gun on his head.
