“They’re working their way up the list,” I reply. “Bradley assures me they’ve got the whole thing under wraps.”

Seer smiles softly. I can sense his relief, pride, and joy all at once. “Now that it's all over, it definitely feels surreal,” Seer says, shaking his head slowly. “I’m just happy that they’re all going to be punished for the horrible things they did.”

“One scumbag at a time,” I reply with a silent chuckle. Seer goes back to reading his book while I search my pockets for a cigarette. I find one in the breast pocket of my cut. I snicker victoriously and pick up a lighter from the ashtray on the table. I notice Seer throwing me sideway glances all the while. I light the cigarette and take a satisfactory drag. “Damn, that’s what I’m talking about.” I let out the smoke in perfect little circles.

“Why do you keep looking at me that way, friend?” I ask Seer in an offhand tone.

Seer is quiet for a while. It’s almost as if he didn’t hear me. But I know he did, so I patiently wait for him to sort his thoughts. He bookmarks his book and carefully puts it aside.

“I had a vision,” he says quietly.

I feel my chest tighten with an unwanted feeling of panic. “A vision?” I asked carefully. “What was it about this time?”

“You were on an altar,” Seer replies, staring intently at my face.

“Oh, fuck,” I murmur to myself. “Don’t tell me I have to kill a priest. And on the altar? What kind of bastard does that make me?”

Seer’s booming laughter echoes loudly in the quiet evening. “What if you were the priest?” he asks, his eyes narrowing teasingly.

I snicker quietly. “I’m too much of a motherfucker to be called by God.”

“How are things with Abigail?” Seer asks quietly.

I suspiciously narrow my eyes at him, wondering at the abrupt change of topic. I’ll let it slide, though.

“She’s good. I suppose,” I add with a sigh. The thought of Abigail sets my heart on a spinning spree of several contradicting emotions. We are so close yet so far apart. I can’t believe I have to see her every day but don’t get to hold her in my arms or kiss her. I can’t even do anything to chase away the pain in her eyes. All I can do is wait…insufferably.

Seer is watching me, his gaze intently fixated on my face. “Has she come around yet?” he asks finally after a few seconds of silence.

I shrug and take a long drag on the cigarette dangling between my fingers. “I’m still giving her space,” I say, letting out the smoke from my mouth and nose. “She needs to…uh…sort her feelings.”

“You don’t sound like you like that very much,” Seer says with a smirk.

“I miss her, mon dieu. Sue me,” I reply with a scoff.

Seer chuckles quietly. “It’s only natural. She is your love.”

“It’s just…I love her so fucking much, you know? But she’s not letting me in. It pains me to see her so lost…so unsure about herself. She used to be so full of life. All she needed to do was smile, and that would make my day. But these days, I see her going about like she’s watching the world move on from the sidelines. She’s a shadow of herself…it’s not easy to watch.”

“She’ll come back,” Seer says in a reassuring tone.

He sounds so sure of himself that I want to ask him for the basis of his conviction, but I take another drag on my cigarette instead. Some questions are best left unasked.

“I’m fucking holding my breath, man,” I say with a little snort. “I’m literally dying here.”

Seer laughs. “Cheer up, mon ami. You found your gem among all that blood. The rarest and the shiniest of them all.”

I look at him, brows raised mockingly. “You’re quoting Mama now?”

“You know I knew she was talking about Abigail from the moment the words were out of her mouth,” Seer says with an amused scoff.

“I wouldn’t say she’s entirely wrong.” A fond smile tugs at my lips, fighting for expression. “She’s indeed a rare gem. And she does brighten my life.”

Seer nods. “She’s good for you, Pocus. And you for her.”

I don’t know if I can entirely agree with Seer on that. Will I ever be good enough for Abigail?

“Can we get back to the part where I commit sacrilege?” I say to Seer with a wide smirk.
