What would it be like if we’d been twin brothers in a typical family without magic and perverted expectations?

Maybe… just maybe, we’d be real brothers who shared a bond and looked out for one another.

But that’s just dreaming.

“Nicholas?” Edward calls, moving his face about blindly. He’s suddenly calm now. “Are you still there? Did you leave me, you bastard!”

I let out a heavy sigh, running a hand down my face “Edward….”

“You must be fucking proud of yourself, brother,” he sneers. “You got me good this time.”

“Did you ever lose your memory at all?” I ask, genuinely curious.

Edward laughs manically. “What a dumb question. I’m a god, Nick. I can get away with anything. It was a ploy to get back the Zoramhus stone and kill you and Victoria.” The smugness suddenly falls off his face, replaced by a blank expression. He turns around and starts to claw the wall again. “I failed. I failed,” he mutters repeatedly under his breath.

A sad knot forms in my throat as I watch Edward revert into insanity.

“Was the sight really worth this?” I ask him.

“You idiot,” he snickers softly. He doesn’t turn around to face me this time. “It’s not about the sight. You should never have been born. I guess you’re here to finish me off.” He stops scratching. His shoulders tensed up as he waited for a response.

“No,” I reply quietly.

“No?” Pocus echoes, his voice ringing with surprise.

“No,” I repeat.

Edward turned to face me again, and his expression was caught between confusion and disbelief.

“Why?”

“I forgive you,” I respond simply.

“Who the fuck are you to pity me?” Edward snarls, rattling the chains once more. “Kill me! Kill me, you fucking coward!”

Edward begins to cry, loud, heart-wrenching sobs that seem to emanate from his soul. He falls to his knees, holding his blood-chained hands out in front of him in a pleading gesture. “Please… Kill me, Nick. I can’t live like this. Please, brother.”

I kneel in front of Edward, placing my hand on his shoulder. “Let’s go home, brother.”

Mother freezes in her tracks, her eyes wide with shock as she gapes at Edward and me in disbelief. My breath hitches in my throat at the sight of her. She looks exactly like she did thirteen years ago… just as gorgeous.

“Nicholas!”

She runs toward us in halting steps. She stops directly in front of me, staring at my face like she thinks I’m an illusion. “Is that really you?”

“Mother,” I call, my voice choked with emotion. “Mother… I….”

Mother closes the distance between us and engulfs me in a tight embrace. She has become gaunt, I realize, wrapping my arms around her waist. She is not the same as I thought. I can almost feel the sadness in her soul as she sobs quietly into my chest.

I feel all the things she can’t put into words.

She pulls back a little in my arms and raises her hand to caress my face. “My baby…,” she purses her lips and closes her eyes, taking in a nervous breath. “Oh, son… I’m so sorry. I’m sorry for not protecting you.”

I feel a heaviness lift off my chest that I never knew was there before. It felt like her words healed a part of me and I can breathe easier.

“I’m here also, mother,” Edward says in a sour tone. “Your unwanted son is home.”
