“I told her to leave her gear at the compound. MaryCat thinks the fucker had a tracking device on her.”

“That’s messed up, Digger. Getting into bed with these fuckers—”

“Would be a smart business opportunity,” I tacked on before he could finish. “And if the head doesn’t know what the hands and feet are doing—”

“Or dicks.”

“—or dicks,” I muttered, “then we can’t judge until we give them the chance to make amends.”

Rex snorted. “You’re taking their faith into account, I presume?”

“Well, it’s what Catholics do, ain’t it?”

“The O’Donnellys aren’t like any Catholics I’ve come across. You know anyone else, never mind a devout follower, who crucifies people?”

“Not since Roman times.”

“Exactly.” Rex sniffed. “It’s a weak leader who doesn’t know what his men are doing.”

“Maybe. Not sure you know what the Prospects are up to at all times though.”

“I’m pretty sure—”

“How about the fact that Mickey’s got a weed habit?” I added.

“Motherfucker. Why didn’t you tell me that sooner?”

I shrugged. “Ain’t a snitch and it’s not a problem. Yet.”

“Aper than usual?”

“Apparently.”

My statement was met with silence, then, “I’ll speak with him. Me and him. No guns, no fucking guards. Ya hear me?”

That’d be a tough request but… “I’ll see what I can do.”

Rex released a soft chuckle. “You’re more invested in this relationship than someone who only walked down the aisle to save a brother’s sister.”

I rubbed the back of my neck. “She’s different.”

He fell silent, then he rasped, “If she is, then hold onto her, Digger. Not many of those come around, and when they do, they flitter through your fingers so fucking fast that they could be a mirage.”

“Yeah. I’m thinking so.” I cleared my throat. “It’s too fast for any serious talk. Don’t mean I don’t want it to get there, but I don’t intend on freaking her out.”

“Some shit just makes sense right from the beginning,” Rex disagreed, and seeing as I knew of his past with the club’s lawyer, I wondered, and not for the first time, what the hell had gone wrong between them.

Because he knew of my proclivities with secrets, I was well aware that Rex had gone out of his way to hide the reasons behind their breakup.

I sighed. “She’s young, Rex.”

“So? You’re not ancient.”

“Might as well be. Plus, I’m a—”
