Was that because his execution was a promise that Uncle Aidan would fix things?

I hoped so.

And maybe, just maybe, he was giving Digger and me permission to be together.

Why else wouldn’t he want me to see whatever Digger did to his sperm donor?

On edge, I sat on my hands as my feet fidgeted against the floor. I couldn’t hear anything out here, and the isolation in a place like this quickly got to me.

Five minutes later, the doors burst open. Aidan appeared first, then Digger who…

I blinked.

He looked lighter.

The tension beside his eyes wasn’t as pronounced.

The downward curve to his lips, at the sides, wasn’t as prevalent.

I noticed all that as I shot toward him, not stopping until I was tunneling into his arms.

He didn’t shove me away, just held me as tightly as I needed him to.

The scent of alcohol was strong—not on his breath, but on his arms.

God.

That was when I forced myself to tune into what Uncle Aidan was saying. “…you can have his property once it’s been cleansed. You’re certain there’s a body hidden there?”

“As certain as I can be without digging it up myself.”

My uncle grunted. “Mary Catherine, I’m grateful to you for bringing this situation to my attention. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Anxiously, I tilted my head to the side so I could study him. “You can’t promise that.”

His smile was cold, chilling. “I think you’ll find that I can. Word will spread about Anthony’s fate. That’s enough for a start. I’ll get Father Doyle involved so we can see who else was forced into marriage this way.” He moved over to me, carefully untangled me from Digger’s hold, then pressed a kiss to my cheek. “Congratulations on your wedding. I wish you a happy future together.”

“T-Thank you, Uncle Aidan,” I muttered in surprise, but I heard the warning buried within the blessing, and I knew Digger had too.

Uncle Aidan would make sure that my future was happy, or Digger would pay the price.

He hummed. “I’ll have Lena send you a gift.” To Digger, he drawled, “I’ll be in touch with your Prez to arrange a meeting. Warn him that I don’t regret setting Five Pointers around your compound—”

Holy hell, they’d barricaded the Sinners in?

“—and I’d do it again in a heartbeat—Mary Catherine’s family. But I have no desire to go to war with your MC.”

Digger bowed his head. “I’ll tell him.”

His tone was remarkably level—either he’d known about his brothers being barricaded or he was just very zen after the altercation with his father.

Somehow, I thought it was the latter rather than the former.

He flicked a look between us then compounded his earlier warning with, “Treat her well or I’ll make certain you do.”

When he turned away, heading toward the office where we’d left his sons earlier, I bit my lip then stared shyly at my husband. “Should I say thank you to Conor, Aidan, and Finn?”

“If you need to,” he answered easily, wriggling his neck from side to side.
