The move had the joint popping.

He sighed. Deeply. Except it seemed to come from his very soul. As if he could breathe easier now that the load on his shoulders was lighter.

“You killed him, didn’t you?”

His gaze was measured as it met mine. “Would you hate me if I said yes?”

“No. I’d just prefer to know, that’s all. I mean, I do know. Uncle Aidan wouldn’t have said…” I heaved a sigh. “I’d like to hear it from you.”

“I killed him. It’s a burden I knew I was carrying, but one I didn’t know was so heavy.”

“You look happier,” I agreed, hesitantly pressing a hand to his abs.

“You scared of me now?” he asked, obviously having noticed my hesitation.

“Of course, I’m not. You’re my protector,” I gently cajoled, not wanting to see any darkness mar the buoyancy of his mood.

“I’m glad he told you to get out. You didn’t need to see me like that.”

“Even if I had, it wouldn’t change my feelings for you,” I assured him.

“Better not to test it.”

I rolled my eyes, but… “You know in the future?”

“I don’t know it well,” he teased, his tone light. Lighter than I’d heard it before. Lighter than his mood.Good. Our conversation hadn’t changed that. “Seeing as it hasn’t happened yet.”

I huffed. “You know what I mean.”

“Not sure that I do, actually,” he joked, but he chucked me under the chin. “What about the future?”

“I don’t want you to go to jail again.”

If the words came out in a rush, then so be it.

He tilted his head to the side. “You might be glad to get rid of me. One day.”

As I looked deep into his eyes, slowly, I shook my head, reminding him, “Some things don’t have to make sense to work, Digger. I think we’re one such thing.”

His lips twitched as he cupped my cheek. “A Five Pointer and a Sinner? That’s definitely something that doesn’t make sense.”

“Until it does,” I prodded.

He let loose a laugh, agreeing, “Until it does.”
