A minuscule smile broke the stern man’s staunch expression. “I’m Rex,MaryCat.”

Digger slung his arm around me. “You can let go now, MC.”

Rex snorted as I ceased pumping his hand up and down in greeting. “So, you’re sticking around, huh?”

“She is.”

Rex nodded. “She can’t stay here.”

Before hurt could lodge itself inside me, Digger snickered. “No way. I figured we’d bed down at Sin’s place until he got back. You have the key, don’t you?”

“Good thinking.” He rubbed his jaw as he rounded his desk and sank into his chair. “The key’s in the safe. I’ll get it for you before you leave.”

“Why can’t I stay here?” I queried. “I don’t want to put you out, Digger.”

“Should probably have thought twice about marrying the man, then.”

Digger glowered at Rex. “Shut up, Prez. I made the suggestion. She was just crazy enough to go along with it.”

“Precisely what I need,” he grouched, but his gaze was soft as it landed on me. Some of his sternness faded as he studied me. “You can’t stay here, MaryCat, because the clubwhores will eat you for breakfast.”

Confused, I queried, “Do you mean that literally or sexually?”

His brows lifted. “I don’t even know.”

“I can handle myself.” To Digger, I assured him, “I really can. You haven’t gone to Sunday service with a bunch of catty Five Pointer daughters who are worse than any characters from a show on E!.”

He didn’t need to know that I spent most of my time in the restroom with Sarah at those events. I wasn’t about to have him leave his home just because I’d turned everything upside down.

But Digger was shaking his head. “You’re too good for this place, baby girl. We’ll set up somewhere better. Start as we mean to go on.”

I could feel something solid settle in my chest again. Something that leaked warmth into my bones and filled me with that dangerous chemical—hope.

“If you’re sure,” I said softly.

He winked at me. “I’m sure. We’re only here so I can grab the key.” To Rex, he demanded, “O’Donnelly said he barricaded the compound.”

Rex cracked his knuckles. “I don’t like that man.” I guessed that was as much of a confirmation as Digger was going to get with me in the office.

“Few do,” I inserted wryly before I mumbled, “I’m sorry for all the problems I’ve brought to your door.”

“I’m used to it.” He flicked a look at Digger. “While I’ve got you, Storm wanted to speak to you. He’s having one of his sober moments,” Rex groused. “You can leave MaryCat here. I won’t bite.”

Digger rolled his eyes but, to me, said, “I’ll be back ASAP, MC. Don’t leave the office without me. Rex is good people. I wouldn’t leave you with him otherwise.”

Though I nodded, I was frowning as he departed.

“If you make him choose between this life and the one you build together, you’ll lose him.”

My eyes flared wide at that statement as I turned to study Digger’s Prez. “I have no intention of making him choose anything. I already asked a lot of him in a short space of time, and you heard me. I was willing to stay here—”

“Nah, that’s not the way to go about this either.” Rex leaned forward and plunked his elbows on the desk. “I know my men. Better than they think I do.

“Digger’s one of the best. Solid worker, trustworthy, loyal. Fuck, he’s worthy enough to sit on my council, but it’s full and I got men who are like my siblings on there.

“He’s also got a streak a mile long for picking up waifs and strays, so you fit the bill.

“If he’s claiming you as his own, then you’re a lucky broad because one of a dozen clubwhores just wish he’d claim them for longer than a night. But he wants you. Wants to leave the clubhouseforyou.” He scratched his chin. “You make him keep his life separate, you’ll lose him.
