Rex hummed. “I never said that.”

“Never said what?”

“That I think you ain’t made for this world. This world,” he repeated, “MaryCat, is made for anyone with the balls to claim it for themselves. No rules, no laws, just the open road and brothers who’ve got your back.” He nodded, more to himself than to me, then grumbled, “You’ll do for him. Just don’t break his fucking heart by changing your mind years down the line.

“If youaregoing to go, do it soon. Bikers might have tough shells but when we love, we love deep.”

Because that was the last thing I expected a rough and ready MC Prez to be saying, I blinked at him. “That sounds like the voice of experience.”

His lips twisted. “Trust me, it is.”

He grunted as he got to his feet then rounded the table and walked behind me. Figuring that he was going to grab the key to Padraig’s house from his safe, I kept my eyes on my knees. I heard the squeak of a heavy door, then it slammed closed, and finally, something was dropped on my lap.

“Sin won’t mind you staying there, but he’ll have a problem with Digger hooking up with you. Watch out for a fight, don’t be shocked if it gets physical fast, and if you can break it up, do. They’re close and Sin’s a mean motherfucker when he loses his temper.”

I peered at him. “Thank you for the warning.”

He gifted me with another grunt. “You going back to school? Digger mentioned that you were still studying.”

“Yes.”

“What’s the endgame?”

I hitched a shoulder. “Genuinely, I don’t know. But it seems a shame not to graduate. I-I never really thought I’d get to put my degree to much use. I knew I’d be married sooner rather than later, and after that, you don’t really do anything other than be a housewife.”

“What is this? 1950?” he argued. “How backward are the Five Points?”

“Very.” But then I thought of that look in Uncle Aidan’s eye and mused, “But maybe a change is in the wind.” I shot him a pointed look. “Uncle Aidan respects strength and smarts. Don’t talk down to him or give him smack. Deal with him like it’s a corporate business meeting and you’ll get ahead.

“I don’t have to know much about the mob to know that the Irish are one of the most powerful factions on the East Coast—”

Rex dismissed that with a waft of his hand. “It’s not about how I talk to him. It’s about howhetalks tome.”

“You advised me on how to handle Sin when he meets Digger. I’m giving you the same in return.

“Uncle Aidan has warped morals, but they’re there all the same. Honor is important to you; otherwise, you wouldn’t appreciate loyalty so much. He’s the same. Just wears a suit.”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “I appreciate the insight.”

I shrugged. “Do with it what you will.”

For a moment, silence passed between us, then he rumbled, “He seems lighter.”

“Digger?” At Rex’s nod, I sighed. “He killed his father. With Uncle Aidan’s approval.”

“He’s more like Nyx than he knows.”

Ah, the makeup brand brother.

I didn’t have a chance to reply because the door opened and Digger walked in. “How is it possible he’s worse sober than he was high?”

Rex hitched a shoulder. “You know what he’s like without Keira.”

Suddenly, Rex’s warning made more sense.

An Old Lady had left a brother, and the brother was reeling. Enough that he was using.

“A fucking mess,” Digger agreed, swiping a hand over his face.
