MARYCAT

I woke up in a bed.

I’d fallen asleep in the bathtub.

My cheeks burned like they’d been set alight as I realizedwhohad transferred me from the tub to the mattress.

He’d seen me naked.

“I tried to wake you,” he murmured, making me jump.

I peered at him and squinted at the only light in the room aside from the windows—the screen on his phone. Which, I noticed, had the Kindle app open.

Rather than focus on the mortifying aspect of him dealing with my pruney nudity, I focused on the interesting. “What are you reading?”

“Why?”

“Because I’m curious,” I whispered.

Plus, I needed to change the subject.

I already knew I was naked between the sheets, and call me a damn prude, but this was the first time in my life I’d ever slept like this.

Did it feel good? Or just weird? I was the kind of woman who lived in her bra, who didn’t like her tatas on the loose. To feel them liberated was unnerving, especially with Digger at my side.

Was he wearing clothes?

My hot cheeks turned molten.

“Lord of the Flies.”

It took a few seconds for my brain to process what he was saying.Lord of the Flies?“Really? Why?”

“I like it.”

“Why?”

“Because I do?” he joked. “Been obsessed since we read it in school.”

Ugh, I hated that book. “You’re rereading it?”

“Yeah. I read it at least twice a year. Reminds me what bastards we can be when we don’t even try.”

“Do you need confirmation of that in your line of work?”

“You’d be surprised.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, sometimes, you have to do stuff that doesn’t sit well with your conscience. And then, you read a book like this. About innocent kids who turn into fucking monsters. It’s a nice reminder that we’re all capable of evil shit.”

“That’s a nice reminder?” I whistled under my breath. “We need to get you reading romcoms.”

When he laughed, I smiled into the darkness.

In the distance, with the curtains open, the strip was clear. A million lights blared, but it was a comforting glow in the pitch-black room. It had to be near dawn, but it was still as bright as ever out there.
