Either that orhe’d gone out of his way to keep the court case quiet because Rachel had worked her wiles on the jury about my reasons for assaulting the bastard.

Although, I wasn’t sure why he’d bother now that I knew about MaryCat’s situation. Wasn’t like the Five Points’ grunts didn’t use rape as a bargaining tool anyway.

If wedidgo to war with them, I’d ride to the O’Donnellys’ compound in Queens and shove the truth in their faces about how their women were being treated on their watch.

Never let it be said that I wasn’t a fucking feminist.

I said none of that, though, just queried, “Since when am I one of your best men?”

“Don’t get too big-headed,” Rex grumbled. “You’re still the dipshit who married Sin’s sister. In fucking Vegas!” He hooted. “I don’t need to beat some sense into you. He’ll do that for me!”

I knew he wasn’t wrong, but I still weaseled, “Sin will see that what we did was the right move.”

“If you say so. You going to make a go of this, or is it in name only?”

“Why do you ask? That’s a pretty fucking personal question. Are we gonna have a sleepover too?”

“Yeah, yeah, smartass. Just remember that I ain’t the one with the rep of beating people to death when I’m mad.” I grimaced as he continued, “Sin might take to the idea easier if you’re head over heels for the girl.

“Last thing I need is for you to stir his temper. I like your skull attached to your neck, and after this, he’ll probably try to break it off. You know how he is when he loses his shit.”

Fuck if I didn’t.

I rubbed my throat, reminding myself that I liked my skull attached to my body, too, and muttered, “I don’t know what the game plan is.”

“Well, I’d figure it out before Sin gets back if I were you.” Rex laughed. “Tell you what. You just got married? Never let it be said I’m not generous. You guys need a honeymoon. I want you back in Jersey in seven days. You hear me?”

My brows lowered. “You’re giving me time off?”

“Yeah, I am. Maybe you can figure out how to stop Sin from making an ashtray out of your corpse in that time.

“I’ll be in touch if the Five Points come calling. Be ready to head back if that’s the case,” he warned. “They’re going to need to see proof that she went of her own volition and that the marriage is signed and sealed.”

I blinked. “I understand.”

“Good. She has our protection. Either way.”

My relief from before was nothing to now.

Knowing she’d be safe no matter what happened, I closed my eyes and dug my fingers into them.

That was when a thought occurred to me.

“I need to tell you something.”

“What now? You rob a bank too?”

I smirked. “MaryCat found the clubhouse’s address on some blog.”

Rex snapped, “Fuck off.”

“I’m being serious, Prez.” This time, my tone brooked no argument.

There was a silent pause, but I knew he was listening which meant the buck stopped with him and not me. “Send me the URL. I’ll get Maverick on it. See you in a week.”

As he cut the call, I glanced around the suite and smirked.

This was home for the next three days.
