Franklin choked, gasped, turned around and saw Nelson Lee in the doorway.

He’ll kill you when you turn over the files. It’s a lose-lose.

But Franklin couldn’t show fear.

“I want to make this right,” Franklin said calmly. He was surprised he sounded so nonchalant. He didn’t want to die. He didn’t want his family to die, but showing weakness now would be the final nail.

The girls are safe. Remember that. The girls are safe.

“I have not been able to find Mr. Warwick,” Nelson said. “He didn’t go home. He left his car at the law office. He hasn’t used his credit cards. He’s not where his ex-wife is staying. Where is he?”

Franklin was flustered, tried to bury it with the fear.

“James told me to handle Grant.” His voice was strong, even though he was very afraid.

Nelson smiled, a quiet evil hiding behind his grin. He held up his phone. “And you called me. Why did you call me, Mr. Archer? Perhaps to take care of your problem for you?”

Nelson stared at him, his pale brown eyes almost yellow. Franklin didn’t speak, trying to see a way out of this mess.

“Where is Grant Warwick?” Nelson demanded, his voice both calm and terrifying at the same time.

Franklin found his voice. Forced himself to sound braver than he was. “I don’t know, Lee. If I knew, I’d take care of it.”

“He hasn’t rented a car. Did he borrow one of yours?”

Franklin shook his head. “He came here, as I told James, and he was a mess. I thought for sure the police would catch up to him.”

“Does he have another car?”

“No.” But... “His ex-wife had a Ford Ranger truck. He kept it in the garage this past year. The firm’s garage.”

“Details.”

“Dark blue, five, maybe six years old. How are you going to find it? He could be anywhere.”

“Now that I know he had access to a vehicle, I suspect he went to his family home in the Catskills.”

How thehelldid Nelson Lee know about Grant’s second home?

The weight of everything that had happened over the last two years hit him hard, starting with Franklin’s attempt to protect his family by hiring Michael Hannigan to obtain the blackmail documents in Legacy’s safe deposit box.

“The Catskills?” Franklin squeaked.

“You should have thought of it, Mr. Archer.”

He’d gone up to the Warwick family vacation home a few times over the years. The rural mountains weren’t Franklin’s idea of fun, but his wife and girls had enjoyed it.

“I can find the address for you,” Franklin said.

“I have it.” Nelson hadn’t moved from the doorway. He said, “I’ll be back tomorrow for the files that my employer wants.”

Franklin breathed easier. He still had time to get the hell away. No way was he turning over the files if his daughters were safe. He just had to make sure that they were, then he’d make the move.

“I will be here.”

Nelson smiled. “Yes, you will.”

Franklin hadn’t seen the gun; it had been in Nelson’s pocket but then it wasn’t. He was fast.
