Charlie put his hand on her knee under the table where Grey couldn’t see him. He squeezed, then asked, “Yes or no, did Granger ask if Brock Marsh was involved.”

“Yes.”

“Did he know who was behind hiring Adam Hannigan to kill Warwick?”

“No.”

“Did he have a list of names or businesses and ask you if they were responsible?”

“Yes.”

“Was one of the names that he mentioned to you involved?”

Grey grinned. “Yes. You’re good at this, Deputy North. This is so much fun.”

Charlie nodded at Regan. “Regan?”

She quickly caught on to Charlie’s plan. She asked Grey about each of the businesses that had been accessed in the Potomac Bank heist.

“Novak Construction?”

“No.”

“Delarosa Equity?”

“No.”

“Legacy CPA?”

“You’re boring me,” Grey said.

“That’s not a no.”

“No.”He sighed dramatically. Appealing to his humanity wasn’t going to work; she doubted he had a conscience.

Tommy reached out to Grant immediately after he talked to Peter Grey. Something Grey had told him—or something Tommy suspected and Grey confirmed through his ridiculous Twenty Questions game—had Tommy going to Grant.

If Grant was the target, it was most likely related to one of his clients. She didn’t have his client list—that information wasn’t easily accessible. But Tommy could have been reviewing court cases, newspaper articles, other resources to build a list of Archer Warwick clients.

Grey had already confirmed that Grant was Hannigan’s target. So she asked, “Have you heard of the Archer Warwick Bachman Law Offices?”

“Yes.”

“Did one of their clients put the hit out on Warwick?”

“Took you longer than Tom to figure it out, but you get some credit for finally getting warmer.”

“Is that a yes?”

“That is a yes.”

“Which client?”

He laughed, didn’t answer.

“I don’t have their client list,” Regan said. “And other people are going to die if we can’t stop them.”

“So?”
