Then suddenly, she remembered the photos she’d taken from Grant’s desk. Inside a folder was a list of names.

She looked at it more closely, skimmed it. “Senator Clarence Burgess,” she said.

“No.”

“Hank Burgess.”

“No.”

“Bruce Rockford.”

No answer.

She looked at Grey. “Well?”

“Not the question you want to ask.”

What the hell did that mean? But she didn’t show her frustration. Instead, outwardly calm, she asked, “Is Rockford involved in any way with the assassination attempt on Grant Warwick?”

“Yes.”

“But he didn’t order it.”

“No.”

“A middle man.”

“Yes.”

“Does he work for Brock Marsh?”

As she said it, before Grey responded, she realizedBrockstood forBruce Rockford.

“Yes,” Grey confirmed.

“Is he the contact person who makes it happen? He’sBrockin Brock Marsh.”

“Bingo.”

Rockford runs Brock Marsh and he must have known Hannigan from way back. Used him for this job. Had him killed to cover their tracks because he hadn’t been on their payroll for a long time.

She asked, “Did Tommy have a name other than Rockford?”

“Your friend didn’t even mention Rockford.”

She looked back down at the list that had been in Grant’s files. Tommy didn’t have this list when he talked to Grey. But he had known that everything revolved around Grant.

“Franklin Archer,” she said quietly.

“You’re getting warmer.”

“Did Franklin Archer put out the hit on Grant?”

“No.”

“But he knew about it,” she said.

“I couldn’t say.” Grey looked at his hands as if inspecting his nails.
