“College? You never mentioned it before.” Sebastian looks surprised.

I give a bashful look. “I didn’t want to say anything, until I’d really thought about it. But all the choices are so overwhelming. I thought maybe you could help me decide?”

Sebastian’s eyes narrow, like he’s trying to figure me out, but before he can say anything, we’re interrupted.

“I need to talk to you.”

We both turn, and I’m shocked to see it’s Becca marching towards our table. She’s well put together, in the same kind of business suit I’ve seen her wear when she worked at Wolfe Capital, but the look in her eyes is completely different.

She’s angry and maybe a little desperate.

“What are you doing here?” Sebastian asks, rising to his feet. He gestures behind her, to the staff.

“I’m the one who scheduled this dinner, remember?” Becca replies.

Sebastian gives her an icy glare. “And your presence is no longer requested. Or did the formal termination not make that clear?”

“I had no choice,” she says, turning desperate. “You won’t take my calls.”

“I have nothing to say to you.” Sebastian turns away.

“Wait, please, this is important,” Becca exclaims, and I feel a pang of guilt, watching this powerful woman come unraveled right in front of me.

Because of me.

“You have to listen to me!” she continues, imploring him. “It’s all a big mistake! I didn’t steal from you; I never would do that. You know me! I’ve been loyal from the start!”

“If you’re quite finished…” Sebastian says coldly. “You should leave, before you embarrass yourself any further.”

There’s no emotion in his voice now. Not even anger. It’s somehow even worse than when he was enraged just moments ago. He’s dismissive, letting her know that she means nothing to him. I can tell by the sadness on her face that she understands that just as much as I do. She knows him so well.

Becca’s face slips. “Sebastian, please! I’ve been loyal to you my whole career. Why would I do this now?”

“You got greedy, I’m sure. It happens to the best of them.”

The restaurant security arrives, and Sebastian nods to them. “Please escort her out.”

“No!” Becca gives a wretched sob, tearing away from them. “It’s not true, you have to believe me. I didn’t do it!”

She turns to me then, begging silently. I look away, guilty.

“You know, I’m not sure what offends me the most,” Sebastian drawls casually, giving Becca a contemptuous look. “That you had the gall to steal from me… or that you were sloppy enough to get caught. You know I demand excellence from all my employees. Clearly, you don’t belong at Wolfe Capital.”

He turns his back, and Becca finally admits defeat, allowing the men to lead her away.

I watch her go, gripped with guilt and shame.I did this.I set her up so that Sebastian would think she stole from the company and get rid of her. I thought she was the one sending me the pictures, but I was wrong.

I’ve ruined her life for nothing.

“Don’t feel bad for her.” Sebastian pulls me back to the present. “She did this to herself.”

I nod, but it’s clearly not convincing. “You’re upset,” he notes.

“I know she did a terrible thing, I just… It’s a bad situation,” I manage to say. “For all of you.” I sigh and give him a weary smile. “I’m sorry, I’ll try to be in a better mood for your clients. It’s been a long day, that’s all.”

“It’s been a long month,” Sebastian replies, looking rueful. Then he pauses. “How about we take a break?”

My brow furrows. “From what?”
