“I have a universal charger back the hotel... never travel without it.” Nora offered up this information, helping to alleviate some of the stress this was bringing up. This woman was always prepared and that seemed to be one of her superpowers.

Handing the laptop back to Nora, something caught my eye by the edge of the bed. “Hold this.”

Nora took the laptop and I dropped down beside the bed. There was a discrepancy in the floor boards. It looked as if something had been moved across it too many times, leaving slight grooves. Slowly, I peeled back the carpet.

“What is it?” Nora asked.

“I’m not sure…”

My fingers danced along the boards. Finally, I pried it open and stared down into the darkness. Pulling my phone out, I turned on the light only to be greeted by an American passport, a bunch of money and a bunch of small vials containing what I assumed was cocaine.

Holding the vials up to the light, I saw Nora turn her nose up.

“I wish I could say I was surprised,” Nora rolled her eyes.

“Don’t” my stomach had started to roll.

Gisella had always had this effect on me. Where I was steady with anyone else, she could bring me to my knees with the stunts she pulled.

“I mean…you don’t remember when the cops busted her for…”

My eyes met Nora’s and she clammed up. Dropping all the items back into the hole in the floor hastily, I needed more information.

“What?” I asked looking at her with a hard glare.

“Nothing. We should go, and get this charged.”

The air in the room had changed. It was no longer stale due to wind blowing in from outside. Nora remembered something about Gisella.

Getting to my feet, I caught her before she could leave and pinned her against the door frame.

“What do you remember?”

Nora rolled her eyes. “Not that I expect you to remember, but your girlfriend was kind of a bitch to me.”

“What? When?”

“High school…I know, so long ago.”

It felt as if someone had ripped the air out of my lungs.

Nora.

Gisella.

High school.

However, I didn’t recover quickly enough and Sebastian DeLuca’s assistant took that as a sign to escape and I let her. We still had to ride back to the hotel together.

She can’t escape me forever,I thought.

For a few more moments, I took in Gisella’s apartment. Fresh wind continued to move through the space, and paper flittered and fluttered before I closed the door. Nothing had alerted to me her exact whereabouts, but I hoped that Nora could revive the computer and find clues of some sort.

I wanted to get out of Italy.

The feeling of being watched was all over my body, so I shook it off and closed up the apartment. Nora and I rode in complete silence the same way we’d came.

Silence suited me just fine.
